16x12 here.

Is 1024 and down still mainstream?

Just out of curiosity, what does this have to do with handicapping?

sjk

If you use a higher resolution you can see more tracks on the Youbet screen. That's why I increased mine.

CJ,

Indirectly it does have to do with handicapping but perhaps I should have put it elsewhere.

I am developing new software and screen resolution is certainly an issue.

Handicapping, by its nature demands lots of columns so more width is important. On the other hand, if I design for 1280 and only 15% of the handicapping world uses such a high resolution, then the other 85% cannot use the software.

I figured it had something to do with it, just checking.

I use a widescreen laptop exclusively when playing the races, and its for precisely the reason you mention.

I use a single-line liquid crystal display that can show up to 40 characters at a time.

Hi Dave,

I use four monitors. Three are set to 1200 x 1600 and the last is set to 1600 x 1200. If that doesn't make sense, think rotation.

Hi GameTheory,

You wrote "I use a single-line liquid crystal display that can show up to 40 characters at a time."

I'd love to see Windows running on that!<G> Best laugh I've had in a couple of days.

Toshiba Satellite, P25 Series I believe (I'm at work now). I don't think I'll ever buy a desktop again. You just haven't lived til you have placed a bet from the crapper! :D:D:D

I believe teeitup has an HP, not sure on his drive speed though.

I'm working with a HP Pavilion ZD 7030us media center laptop.
Pentium 4 3.06GHz w/HT Technology
17" display
80 GB Hard Drive - 5400 rpm
768 MB memory(currently) expandable to 2GB
128 MB Video Memory
802.11g Wirless
DVD+RW/R & CDRW Combo Drive

Mr Craig helped me out a bunch in my search for a new computer. This portable blows my old desktop away performance wise & not to mention the ability to place that wager from the crapper!!

LOL - You guys are funny.

I was convinced that I wanted a 7200 rpm hard drive. Searched hard and found three:

Toshiba - Never in stock and pretty expensive (about $2500+).

Fujitsu - Reasonably priced at around $1,800 but nobody seems to carry them.

Dell - That is where I landed. 2.6GHz, 512mb RAM, 15 inch monitor. (Not so cool as you guys, but I did get the 7200 rpom drive!) Priced at around 1550 (with an upgrade to XP pro).

Note that after purchasing, my wife decided she needed a laptop to replace her desktop and appropriated it. (So I purchased a second one at a slight discount.)

FWIW, I have discovered that Dell is a pretty good company to deal with... but if you purchase from them, make a personal friend in customer service... they seem willing to build a personal relationship with the customer. When I have a problem such as billing or shipping (I had both) I simply email the customer service rep directly and she solves my problems with no telephone interaction necessary on my part.

Will your new software work on my MITS Altair 8800 confuser (circa 1975)? The screen resolution is 0000 by 0000.

Dual monitor setup: 2 @ 23" CRT both set at 1920 x 1440-- capable of doing higher(2048 x 1536).

Btw i'd recommend everyone do this rather than get a single lcd-- both crt's combined cost less than a 21" lcd (@ the comparable viewing area of that-size crt), and buy $omething else to boot with the difference.....

NDJ,

You said: "Will your new software work on my MITS Altair 8800 confuser"

No, but I can create an emulator to make it look like that... displays one line at a time, one character at a time, in binary code, 8 bits wide.

Still got your Heathkit? <G>

Dave

PS: I wonder how many people here are old enough (and nerdy enough) to even know what we are talking about. <G>

Penguin,

"CJ and I use the same laptop, Toshiba satellite P25 series though I have this bad boy set to 800x600 the eyes aren't what they used to be."

That is why I personally went to 1280 and moved the monitor WAY back. I need the characters REAL small. (On my desktop systems.)

Actually, before I got this 19-inch flat panel, I was at 1600. The FP just won't go that high.

My laptop is in like 1400-something. (The Dell monitor is not the greatest, even though I upgraded the video.)

Georgie,

I like the idea of your setup, (and I can only imagine what Michael N.'s is like).

But I have a space problem on my desk so I do it the other way around... 2 computers, keyboard, mouse share one monitor through a KVM switch. I jump back and forth by double-tapping the control key.

My next stop is a 22-inch monitor, but after just springing for two laptops and a pda for my wife, and a new language upgrade, I am down almost 5 G's. Going to take awhile for my BR to recover.

You'll need the difference to pay the additional cost in electricity.

I do have 22 inchers! I think the gamma rays affected my brain.

here're some 22 inchers at pricegrabber:

the features compare chart(for as many as you want is dynamite-- i just can't get it to go to it directly).

Craig:

Thank you for that heads up.

Georgia,

Sorry, I did not mean to call you "Georgie."

The links did not work, but tell me about your 22s. I have only seen the Sony.

You can call me Ray, and you can call me Jay, and you can call me.... Actually it's Paul from Georgia-- Georgie didn't sound too bad though <g>... Georgia, maybe after about 10 combo J.D. & Southern Comfort manhattans.,,,, and i do look better than Kerry's wife... LOL

I fixed the the url a bit, you can now click it: i have numbers 5 & 6 from the top:

NEC 2070SB-BK 22" Monitor and ViewSonic P220F 22" Monitor

At that size i didn't find any with significantly higher numbers, and at the same time their price leans strongly towards the lower end of the scale. I've had them for about two months-- real happy with them.

BTW just noticed the third one that compares fairly favorably in specs(a smidge lower refresh rate), for only $285:
Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040U

Kind regards.

We are obviously talking about different monitors here. I was referring to the 22" wide-screen, flat panel.

I have been eyeballing them every couple of months. Seems like just 6 months ago they were $2k. Now they are down to around $1,800 (refurb) I think. Still a bit out of my reach.

Sorry 'bout that....

There's a Samsung brand new one for 1.397 K here: http://salestores1.com/salt22wischd.html Also found for 1.285 here: http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.asp?ref=froogle&sku=SAMLTN226W

(Have never dealt with above merchants)and for 1.699 K at Best Buy: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?j=1&id=1067390479651&type=product&ref=03&loc=01

I've never used a Samsung monitor, but it never ceases to amaze me how many outstanding & positive comments that brand garners every forum i go to-- tech, overclocker, etc......

And as with above-mentioned merchants, if this one's reputable-- i'd jump all over this 30" for @ the price you yourself just mentioned: http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/x30svnagaiii.html

Myself, i'd want a higher resolution than 1280 x 720-- like this one: http://store.yahoo.com/col88/lctv2201a.html but not at triple/quadruple the price...<g>

BTW I noticed here, a refurbished Sony wide/flat 23" for 1.795: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_compare.php/?topcat_id=1&page_id=37&page_id=37&masterids%5B%5D=618032&Compare+Selected+Products.x=30&Compare+Selected+Products.y=7

All of these are not so much out of my budget, but just real hard to rationalize spending those $$$--- maybe I'm overlooking something?

There's gotta be someone here that posesses or sells professionally such a model-- that would be willing to trade you one for your products.....

In any case: hope you obtain one soon....
