To any of you present or past race horse owners.

Near the end of the year, how much impact does accounts and taxes have on the placement of your horses in the claiming ranks?

I'm just looking at Jeff Mullins at Los Al this week, and he looks to be running a fire sale on fillies there. I started wondering if tax consequences played into year end barn management at all.

Tax consequences never mattered one iota in the placement of horses owned in my partnership. It might matter if there was an estate liquidation, but I'm still alive

However, 3 year olds are typically dropped in claiming price in the last 2 months of the year because they won't be worth as much running against older horses in the new year. Yes, there are some races written for 4 year olds only in the first 2-3 months of the year, but a horseman can't count on finding those spots with any degree of regularity.
