View Full Version : "All" is the Key Sometimes

I don't use the "all" button when betting exotics very often. I've read the literature. However, if the field size is large enough (11 or more), I do like to do it at certain race tracks...like Colonial Downs which opened last Friday. On the fourth race that day, a maiden special event on the turf at 10 furlongs, the post time favorite in the 13-horse field was trained by one Michael Dickinson. The best he could do was finish fourth. The winner paid $127.80. The second choice ran second by a neck. A 111-1
shot completed the trifecta. The three winning $1 tickets, a 13-8-12 combo, paid a cool $10,586. The horses I liked ran 1-2. Lucky for me, I bet it correctly. I did it again today on the sixth on a much smaller scale. If you are a turf/trifecta specialist like me, this annual meet is a goldmine.

You're just begging the question:

How did you pick a $127 horse for the first slot??

I didn't pick the winner, per se. I liked the second choice who ran second. Even though this was a maiden event, this horse had beaten more than half the field in a stake race, off a long layoff. I generally key a horse on top of 5-8 others, depending on the size of the field. I also use run-downs with one other "price" horse in the second and third slots underneath my top choice. And I put the price on top in case he pulls the upset. In this instance, the winner looked like the "main" speed. But every race differs. The Dickinson horse looked like a overbet favorite who could easily run out of the money.

Could you please explain the term "run-downs" as used in your last past?

Thank you.

To each his own. I consider the all button to often be a waste of money. I don't need to be putting a whole bunch of money on a hope or a wish that a bomb comes third or wherever.

You got lucky, plain and simple. You liked a 9-5 shot and played it all over the place and caught a needle in a haystack.

Overlay -- A run-down simply means using all the other horses in a particular slot as part of an exotic wager.

Zman179 -- That's one way to look at what happened. I wholeheartedly agree with you...I did get lucky. However, I chose a good race to bet (vulnerable favorite) and my two key horses ran 1-2 combining for a $712 exacta. Essentially, I bet an $11 13-8 exacta. Had I done this instead, I would have won about $6600 less. That's the very reason why "all" is sometimes the key.

Here is another one for you with as much meaning..

bet all the horses in all the races, and some days you will come out ahead...if not only to lose it...

its not that uncommon to hit the all button and catch a longshot in a 12 horse field and sometimes its a smart play to make. means somethings got a good chance to pay and you dont want to lose out for a couple of extra bucks

I agree--you can't get lucky unless you put yourself in position to---if you pick your spots well the all button can be a big friend.

Sometimes, anything works. Try this one, handicap a tri in your usual manner, but then reverse the order of your bet. So all your horses that you bet for 3rd are now bet to win and the the horse(s) you keyed to win are now used for 3rd. It's amazing how often this comes in especailly with the "All " for 1st. You have to be contrarian.

In the long run I have found the all button to be very expensive.
I rarely hit it anymore.

"Show all" is good when a bridgejumper is present.

Several big "hits" have come my way because of the "ALL" button.
I use it often when I can't separate two horses in a race.
I'll use them both in the first and third slot of a trifecta using the "all" button in the middle.
I'll then box the two I like in the exacta.
If a "stranger" finishes second, splitting the pair I liked...bingo!
If my pair run one-two I get the consolation prize.
Amazing how often that "stranger" gets up, or just hangs on, for second place.
As a rule, if one of my two choices is double digit odds, I'll throw a win bet into the mix.

I have a friend that only play Pick6's on days when there is at least one race loaded with "impossible horses" -- like 2YO baby races filled with first time starters.

He loves that All Key.

He's either swearing by it, or at it!<G>

its a good button as a matter of fact it should come with little before and after faces on it like this guy here  to this guy;) or this guy here:cool: to this guy:( or maybe from mr  hotshot to mr:p friend or foe? you can only wait for that 10 year photo sign to finally come down, then you'll have all your answers:D just watch out that you get addicted to it
