What kind of jockey colony do they have over there? Check out this chart from Monday's second, where apparently another lame horse (Rye Frost) was hard ridden through the drive by an apparent numbnuts named Sixto Castro, while only down by 30 lengths or so.

A horse's welfare has to be paramount, and any jockey who cannot tell when a horse is lame is a threat to their mount, as well as all the other jockeys and horses, and should immediately lose their license.

You want to see a brutal ride, watch today's 5th race at Churchill.
The jockey on #1 Magnum Force tries to squeeze through a two inch hole, clips heals, falls and causes another horse to go down.

This chart caller loves to complain about delayed post times, as if anyone on earth cares but him (obviously we care about post time, but if the horses load slowly for some reason, life will go on).

As far as the jockey, obviously urging on a badly beaten horse until it is too tired to run anymore doesn't sound good. However, you might notice though that for every post like yours, there are 100 posts about how a jockey cheated by stopping riding early, riding poorly, easing a horse that "shouldn't" have been eased (as if anyone who isn't on the horse would know that), etc. The riders are damned if they do, damned if they don't. They certainly take a lot more crap from owners, trainers, and the public when they ease a horse than when they beat it senseless to the wire though, so that's usually the direction they'll go in. Looks bad for the game either way.

There is a big difference between being beaten off and being injured, and it is paramount for everyone concerned that a jockey know which is which. This was not a case of a tired horse fighting for a payout position, this horse was running its own race a mile behind the rest at nearly 80-1.

Pulling up an injured horse immediately or riding it out may literally be the difference between life and death.

True story, 3 County Fair, maiden first time 6yos mare, ridden by an unknown apprentice. Horse is quickly 20 lengths behind, and stays their for a circuit. Jockey is relentlessly whipping the poor thing, who even if she had a rocket shoved up her posterior, was not even going to finish next to last. Horse breaks both front legs at the top of the stretch. Horse is just standing their, tilted, since one leg was broken higher up than the other. Think that visual was good for the industry? or should the jock just have wrapped it up when he realized the situation was hopeless.

If racing does not do more for its equine athletes, it is coming to a quick end. How many deaths are acceptable for entertainment? This is the age of youtube and social media and everything is known almost immediately, with pictures to boot. No use hoping the general public will never become aware of stuff like this anymore. Some accidents are unavoidable, sound horses get injured, but when a 6yos first time starter breaks both legs while being ridden by an incompetent rider that is whipping the crud out of it, it seems to me it does a lot of harm to the industry.

It is absolutely in everyone's best interest that jockeys take care of their mounts. We have just had to many of these incidents recently, the jock who rode the horse who broke down back to the winner's circle, the poor horse that won the All American Futurity who was literally dragged a quarter mile back to the winner's circle by its celebrating connections even though it was obviously in distress, the other recent event at PARX, the broodmare who came back off a five year layoff at Los Al and didn't make it a quarter mile before breaking down.

Oh, and the snarky reference to the chartcaller, are you upset that they are doing their job? I think honesty in that position is a great aid to the everyday handicapper, instead of the generic useless comments that a bunch of them throw out every day.

Hamble is right, the public is shifting more towards a sceptic view of animals used for sport, and stuff like jockeys beating horses with no chance of a payout positions is easily found on social media and does nothing but hurt the industry.

So many options why would anyone wager a dime at that cesspoll?

There aren't so many options on Monday and Tuesday, and some of us are 'cesspool' experts and make good money there.

Can't wait for Sixto to head to the Pig Penn during Parx's break.
