Every race on today's card at Aqueduct has a relatively short field. It's kinda hard since short fields result in chalkfests and rarity of horses over 20-1 odds. When it comes to short fields, it can be anybody's race.

Field sizes in each race (after scratches)
Race 1: 5
Race 2: 5
Race 3: 4
Race 4: 7
Race 5: 6
Race 6: 8
Race 7: 8
Race 8: 8
Race 9: 8

I wouldn't consider 7 or 8-horse fields to be totally short, but it's still short.

Hmmm, I guess that explains it. But why are they running 6 days a week? Plus, the track seems to be playing quite slow today.

And they ran on Wednesday as well.

I don't get it either. But that's the racing business sometimes.

Seems to me those two sentences oppose each other. But I agree AQU has been pretty darned chalky recently. So much so I backed off making any serious plays.

I made it through the Monday card without losing money. But my readouts have been improving lately, and did so again today. R3 convinced me to be alert. R5 turned out to be fun even though I only scored due to a last second action play. BUT, not only was it exciting as hell, R6 made my week.

It only takes one race...

They're only short fields if you're looking to make win bets, a 6 horse field has 30 possible exacta outcomes and 120 possible tri outcomes.

I've noticed that half the fields have less than average number of starters lately.

I know it's only Monday, but I'm certain this will go down as "The Post of the Week"

something rarely mentioned with low payoffs is dime breakage as an additional
take out by the tracks.
it is a much higher tax percentage-wise on smaller payouts than the larger payouts regardless of what type of wager you make.
but as long as people are determined to gamble on horses they will justify there actions in doing so.
the racing industry imo are predators taking advantage of a group of gambling addicts.

At least nyra does have nickel breakage on payoffs less than 10 bucks but increases breakage as the payoffs increase

Ugh I hate reading posts about countless chalks coming in and small field sizes. ..there is money to be made on these races!

Sun., 11/22, 105 entries BEFORE SCRATCHES spread over 9 races, an average of nearly 12 per race.

I'd set the over/under on the number of scratches today at around 40, though.

And this is one of the big problems at some tracks .... at the Big A you often get a gazillion scratches at 11:00 am, 80 minutes before the first post. It takes some of us much longer than 80 minutes to handicap a card.
