#3 Heavenly Moment

What a name to root for in the 1st race on Opening Day at MVR!

#7 High Hopes E Day

Versatile style and big price for high percentage Trainer/jock combo.

#6 Dimeonthelime

Speedy type stretches out to a mile under bug boy. One to catch.

2

#5 Tobacco Fox

Lightly raced 7 yr old much better on dirt. Won vs 10K at Hawthorne.

#3 Colonel Jordan

Been knocking on the door at this level. Could get perfect trip today.

#2 Red Ale

Flew late to just miss when dropping to this level at Mountaineer 10-12

3

#6 Tilt the Balance

Distance specialist should be sitting just off the pace. “Go to jock” on.

#4 The Pink Wildcat

Speedster hopes the track stays wet. Needs the lead early to compete.

#7 Forester’s Diva

Ultra consistent mare 1st or 2nd 8 sprints in a row. Logical favorite.

4

#5 Cardiac Rehab

Favored in 9 of last 10 races. Run to the window if you get 6-1 odds.

#6 Don’t Stop Me

You never know when this guy will stop or keep on going. Big price!

#11 Distinctive Move

Rarely runs a bad race but MVR is not his favorite track. Tread lightly.

5

#2 Jezabel’s Charm

Tried hard vs open company earlier in career. Ohio Breds is place to be.

#10 Pebbles Pick

Cuts back to a sprint and gets Pilares. Battles with top pick through out.

#7 Cassie

Shook off cobwebs 10-08. Exits key race in May. Longshot chance.

6

#2 Crazy Giulia

Call me crazy but this race screams “bombs away”! One of many here.

#6 Westshore Road

Likes to pick up checks but too many 2nds and 3rds. 37-2-8-7 record.

#11 Dorothy’s Blitz

3 yr old slowly learning game. Faced tougher at Hazel. Like 10-24 work.

7

#12 High Mystery

Thanks to DQ on 05-08 he’s eligible for this condition. Stalks the pace.

#10 Great Victorian

10 year old arrives from Gulfstream. He’s the mystery horse in here.

#5 Sarge’s

This soldier will be far back early. Look for him to make big move late.

8

#11 Coronado Crown

Well bred Parx invader working steadily. Gets 1st Lasix for top Trainer.

#1 Sharon Jones

She has run decent on turf, synthetic and dirt. Overdue for victory.

#4 Blink

Due to a big class drop daughter of City Zip might blink and wake up.

Early one Feb, when a winter from Hell had closed many tracks, I found an open track I hadn't heard of--Mahoning Valley. They were regular t-breds, ran in a circle, good enough. I handicapped as I usually did for any track, put my bets in ($5 win at the time) and left the house. I come back later on....see how I did---nada. Didn't even hit the board. I go ahead the next day---same results--nothing.
Now this is getting personal. I made the worst mistake a horseplayer can make---instead of just looking elsewhere....perhaps my more familiar home track GGF which was in full swing...I decide hell no---I'm gonna whip this puppy if it kills me.
I settle in for the long haul at Mahoning Valley. I don't know why, I can't explain it.....someone on this board once said it very well though----"this track just doesn't suit my handicapping style". It took me 5 weeks to finally throw in the towel @ Mahoning Valley.
I won a whopping 2 of 38 win bets. Lost my last 22 in a row. All of them $5 win bets except 1, strangely, was for $10 LOL. I must have thought that bet was a LOCK!
Anyone can throw darts at a Racing Form and do better than 2 for 38. I believe I only gave up because the winter/spring meet ended.

Here are the stats of a hard-headed horseplayer who has hopefully learned a lesson, courtesy of Mahoning Valley:

#of Bets...Win%...$1 ROI...Wagered...Payoff....Profit/Loss
.....38......5.26%....-0.85.....$195.00...$28.50....$-166.50

Was wondering if anyone else has their own "Mahoning Valley" track they just can't buy a win at?

Mahoning Valley is an acquired taste, no doubt. Since I work and practically live there now, it soon became comfortable to me. Last year started with an extreme outside bias. After the first day, it looked like the inside was dead, the middle and outside were very good. The surface is deep, so look for trainers that have good credentials and money backing to send out fit horses. Subtle class drops are also prevalent.

i happen to like a horse there in the allowance today, ALLINEEDISGOLD. he ran a huge race the last time he was in and had some problems that should be ok today. tough race though, but a real good horse that should be about the 3rd choice to the race. he is running against the 2 horses that beat him last time so that is always going to be a tough task

Beulah Park in Columbus Ohio was death at the windows for me. Now Beulah has migrated north and become Mahoning Valley Racecourse . . . my poor luck has mostly continued but I believe isn't winter/spring racing in general a tough gamble?

As RR mentioned changing track conditions make it difficult to predict race shapes and it's tough to figure who has solid stock and how long the horses can hold form.

That said, having Mahoning Valley near my place for a winter retreat is delicious. I call it my senior center and march over religiously as often as I can. As for the losing - all clubs have dues and the big score is always just around the corner.

Mahoning  This is a nice little track to visit. I am from Ohio and make about a 45-50 min trip to Mahoning. I try to go once every couple of weeks for the winter card. The place is set up real nice. My only gripe is on a crowded day there is not enough tellers and machines to take bets. I guess that could be said at times for any track though. It is a nice little setup though.
