I'm shopping for a home laptop and a portable pc and have no clue what I'm doing. Any advice would be appreciated! LOL.

One for home to put pics on and of course to handicap. One for the track that is light and allows me to type quick (hate those small buttons) and can capture spontaneous pics/video needs on the fly.

Laptop at home ran out of room (from too many pics/videos).

Can you help Kash? or anyone??? Any advice?

Surface is a nice but I would worry about taking anything like this to the track. Something at least semi-rugged would probably be better IMO. For 2015 the Panasonic Toughbook 54 line is worth a look. I haven't been hands-on with the latest Panasonic's but they've been good to me in the past. They're also on the 'fringes' more than ever these days because few people are still willing to pay $1500-$2000 for a device when Amazon sells a $50 tablet.

A couple of colleagues I work with swear by the surface, since it's easy to tote around and can convert hand-written notes from meetings into text easily. They sure are pricey.

I had a Chromebook which was cheap, but too small of display for detailed work. I don't know how so many players can handicap on a tablet or even a laptop - I need a pair of 27 inch monitors on my desktop.....

If I were wealthy, I'd buy the Microsoft Book in a heartbeat. Especially the top end machine. That thing looks absolutely sweet...

I think they've hit a grand slam with this laptop/tablet...

EMD, my advice to you is to completely get rid of windows and start using linux. A cheap entry level laptop that perfectly meets your needs is the following:

of course there are many other choices depending on your needs... As far as storing images and other documents, simply use dropbox so you will be able to access them from any device you want and you will not have the need for backups.. For more details, call me anytime..

It's a beautiful, "covetable" product.
But it's a luxury(2k for 16 gb version)that imho does not do as as the only or production portable.
HOWEVER, if above title doesn't apply to you, disregard what I've said & do get it.
Things I don't like about it: proprietary charging & only one usb port that is NOT C.
SO, right off the bat it loses key advantages...
of lugging less weight & oodles of cables.
As much as possible I'd want same cable to charge & connect to phone, external drive or other screen for all my peripherals: sometimes I need to carry more than one lappie/tablet, often I need to plug in to laptop the phone, a flash drive and a tablet.

THEN, there's the inherent flaw with tablets: portability dictates small, crammed, no fan, little or no vents...hardware scales down(temps).
So you pay top notch for hardware you don't get to use to its fullest.
HOWEVER, this latest generation processor is supposedly engineered for these thin books...

I'm also looking for something, but not be so worried about theft/damage that I distractedly bet the wrong horse,
I do NOT want a regular hard drive,
ideally 2 ssd drives & separate gpu(so likely a laptop and separate high end tablet)
I INSIST on:
usb 3c AND not just one,
16 gb or more ram...between 64 bit and websites loading so much cap, + makes it easy to run VM with the ancient programs.

I'm waiting on Black Friday...between new products being still released, and for the surface price maybe I can end up with laptop + tablet + smartwatch.

HOWEVER, this latest generation processor is supposedly engineered for these thin books...That's the beauty of the book though. When NOT in tablet form (ie, when on the keyboard dock), there is a SECOND (this time Nvidia) graphics adapter available (built into the keyboard until itself) which it uses to boost power (of course this has nothing to do with database processing, but I point out the clever way in which they've attempted to conquer the lack of "tablet power").

Anyway, from what I saw and from what I've read, this thing is well thought out, powerful, but also expensive....

I agree with the SSDs, forget about these laptops with 5400 RPM spinners in them, I can't believe they're still selling this stuff, the drive is worth $25. IMO it's far better to buy one or two aftermarket SSDs from Newegg and just replace the original drives. 500GB SSDs are very reasonably priced aftermarket right now. You'll pay three times more per drive if the laptop is already equipped with it. I mean to give up a hundred or two is one thing but if you can replace a drive get the OS back onto it and save yourself $400 it's a no-brainer.

Not sure about a grand slam. Maybe a double with two men on.

For that kind of budget, Apple has a pretty firm grip on that demographic, and those kool-aid drinkers won't be changing brands.....
