Why can they not show a person smoking a cigarette on TV but they can show violence?

My 5 year old grandson innocently asked: Why is this person smiling when someone is pointing a gun in his face?

And we give these low-life’s Oscars? Wake up America!

The backbone of film and TV action drama has always been conflict - a threat to our protagonist and their ability to overcome the bad guys and live happily ever after. Whether that be westerns or mobsters or war films, they all involve guns. Always have, always will. Have they always been "low-life's", or is that just now? :rolleyes:

We don't award Oscars, it's the industry that makes the movies who gives the awards.

The reason that Hollywood makes these kinds of films is because the general public pays to see them. If we wanted to see more films like Bambi and Cinderella they would be making them, instead.

Why can they not show a person smoking a cigarette on TV but they can show violence?It goes back to the 1950s and Newton Minow's "Vast Wasteland" speech. One of the concerns was that children could operate a TV set without adult supervision, whereas they had to deal with an adult if they went to a movie. That was before the V chip, before any chips at all for that matter.

They also cannot show alcohol consumption or drug use. There are FCC regulations but it's actually self censorship on the part of networks and TV stations. The FCC has been challenged in court and the FCC lost but networks and stations mostly still abide by the rules.

I find all the technical inaccuracies pathetic. I can't remember the movie but it had a horse match race and it showed both horses being above even money. A common one is using a defibrillator to save a person who is flat lining, they don't work on people who have no electrical activity to the heart.
Ballistics are another joke, a shot from a .45 revolver isn't going to make a 200 pound man fly 10 feet backward through a window. You also are not safe hiding behind a modern car door during a gun fight. Also a cop isn't going to single handidly chase a suspect armed with a full auto UZI with a 100 round magazine while carrying only a 9mm S & W with a 7 round clip. Also 99% of car fires do not lead to a massive explosion.

Many people get their knowledge of police procedures and ballistics from movies, like it or not.

No, but I have usually lived out in the sticks, where you could get away
with conducting experiments relating to burning, shooting and blowing things up. Middle aged I no longer do anything illegal, where I live now you can shoot on your own property and burn your own trash. In fact
I have a car door apart right now to change a window motor, I almost think you could shoot a pellet gun through one of those.
