According to officials at the New York Racing Association, the amount of money bet on Smarty Jones was the most money bet on a horse in Thoroughbred racing history. Though NYRA officials were unable to break out on Monday how much exactly was wagered on Smarty Jones in the $23,355,741 win-place-show pool, they said that the sum was nearly $15 million.

Thanks to Gametheory, I have the actual pools. Although, the pool total I have differs by $11. But when you're talking 23 million what's $11?

$15,378,593 Win pool total
3,906,059 Place pool total
4,071,078 Show pool total
-----------
$23,355,730 TOTAL
===========

Smarty's bets

$ 9,661,061 Win bets Smarty
1,374,661 Place bets Smarty
1,510,992 Show bets Smarty
-----------
$12,546,714 TOTAL bets Smarty

DRF should have said sum was nearly $13 million. But what the heck -- it's Smarty Jones we're talking about here and this is New York.

Here are the bets at 20 minutes to post. Interestingly, most of the money was wagered well in advance. Not surprising. Same thing happens in the KY Derby.

12822970 win pool ttl
3103295 pl pool ttl
3255537 sh pool ttl
--------
19181802 total
========

8611737 smarty win
1040353 smarty pl
1164528 smarty sh
-------
10816618
========

And one more thing... how the f can NYRA not know how much was bet on a horse in the Belmont Stakes?

And another thing, as long as I'm slagging NYRA...

I drove down from Connecticut last week to buy tickets for the Belmont Stakes after reading in a DRF article that additional tickets were on sale.

I get there and they're sold out. No big deal. I figured that could happen. But what ticked me off was that I had to pay $2 to park and $2 general admission to buy the tickets -- which were no longer available. Could you imagine going to Yankee Stadium and being charged parking and admission so that you could buy a ticket to a future game?!!!

In fact, I'm so p'o'd about this I'll post it again elsewhere.

Do you have the countrywide Canadian pools or the other "outside of the US" pools with other sites contracted with NYRA? NYRA knows these total amounts in order to calculate their contratual fee. This incremental would make up the extra wagering over and above the $13 million that you have accounted for in comingled pools to get to the $15 million cited by NYRA in their press release.

Nope. Don't have them. But you raise an interesting fact. That could be where the discrepency comes from.
