Hi Folks,
I need some help.

I am a big fan of Ghostzapper and it suddenly occurred to me that there seems to be no Stakes race named after him. Or is there? I searched in Equibase (http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Stakes) but they list only Graded Stakes and none showed up.

I was also wondering about A.P.Indy and Invasor (I know he didnt race too long in the USA.. but still). again no results on Equibase. When can we hope to get some races after these great horses (and also Wise Dan).

QUESTION
So.. does anyone know the best resource/site to look up the history behind most of the named stakes?

The only information I can find on the internet on stakes races are from:

1) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graded_stakes_race#U.S._graded_stakes_races . Wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Grade_1_stakes_races_in_the_United_States ) also have a category field that lists in a non-sortable format - all grade 1 stakes
2) Thoroughbred Owners Association has a page, and this list seems sortable once you copy it. However, it has some unknown symbols like "L"?? http://toba.org/graded-stakes/races.aspx

3) DRF has a stakes schedule (drf) (http://www1.drf.com/misc/stakes_schedule.jsp) , but that is a monthly calendar

All three have major deficiencies and are actually mostly restricted to Grade I stakes or the Toba site has just names but not other historical info about the race itself or the tradition etc behind the name.

"L" means "listed" I believe

Try this website: www.offtrackbetting.com/graded_stakes_results.html

All NA stakes are named and graded by the American Graded Stakes Committee of the TOBA

To your question, I think if you did a Google search with the name in quotes, you should be able to find if any races with that name exist. For example, if you Google "Ghostzapper Stakes", you get a bunch of articles about horses sired by Ghostzapper winning stakes races. If you search for "Risen Star Stakes" you get stories about the results of that race, not about Risen Star's races.

Second, I think a horse like Ghostzapper, as good as he was, because he only ran sporadically (11 races over three years) and didn't really have a "home track", it's less likely he'll get a race named for him. He did win three Grade 1 races at Belmont, that would be the closest thing, but not exactly what, say, Sky Beauty was to New York racing. Maybe it will happen for him someday.
