Just noticed this the other day. The purse distribution format for NJ-bred races at Monmouth this year reduces the winner's share from 60% to 57%, and gives the difference to the horses that finish off the board; this means that in an 8-horse field, for example, there is 57% to first, 20% to second, 11% to third, 5% to fourth, and 1.75% each to fifth through eighth.
But why don't they stagger the unplaced shares? In the above case that would mean 2.5% to fifth, 2% to sixth, 1.5% to seventh and 1% to eighth.
