When you keep doing it at work even after having been given every chance in the world. I know Sam. He is a repulsive person and the booze did not help. Glad to see him gone and hope it is permanent.

Do you think that is funny? Guy should have been fired back then but they stuck with him. This is how he repaid them. Truth be known, he thought the whole thing was a joke. Amazing he didn't get caught again for almost 2 years.

No, Greg. I do know him. I know plenty more about him I'm not going to put out there because that's the kind of man I am. He is a reprehensible person. The booze just made it worse. I won't say any more.

I had no idea. I'm a FB friend of his, and he's always happy and posting pictures of him and his girlfriend, Laura. She's a lawyer I believe. Holy Cow, she may just come in handy if this is all true. I am clueless. I never met him, or her, personally, but I know lots of people that have, and no one has ever said a word to me about his drinking. Such a shame, because right now he seemed to have so much going right for him. :bang:

Was reading some of the local (NY) reports. I'm amazed--- this guy's a friggin celebrity! I can't name the bugler @ GGF, and can spit to GGF from here (and often have). This is the last thing I read out of NY:

"We do know Sam the Bugler was escorted out of the jocks room for being too drunk last week. But as far as the part about him playing the Godfather over and over until they let him out???? As much as I love Saratoga they got to chill with hassling Sam. Everybody knows Sam the Bugler is a drunk. It adds to the charm of the whole thing. Who cares if he plays a sloppy Bugle. That’s just Sam being Sam. It’s not like he’s riding the horses."

Appreciate the response NCG. I too, am used to seeing him "enjoying" himself. I have no issue with that as long as he has someone to drive him home. I was just wondering if anything excessive happened in the jockeys room. Did he make a bet and get angry at a jock? Was he bothering the jocks? Something must have ticked someone off.

He was put in a room in the building that houses the jock's room while they were deciding what to do with him. There was no incident there. The incident occurred in the winner's circle area. According to witnesses he was visably drunk. Security asked him to leave, at which point he started yelling obscenities. Another security guard had to come and assist taking him to the afore mentioned room.

Please re read what you just wrote. You have no problem with someone who has already embarassed his employer in an alcohol related incident drinking on the job? Is this correct? Do you think his employer should feel the same?

It is not professional to show up at work like this. he's also been suspended from driving a few years ago. Not good for a man who has said although his pay is modest and is a 6 day a week job , five hours a day , he enjoyed the job. And thee was always that extra time to moonlight . I hope he really gets intense help this time .

Thanks for clarifying. It's a touchy subject OTM Al. I was referring to him taking pictures with many people, playing the bugle in the crowd, mingling with tons of people etc.

The drinking, I won't hang him for taking a sip BUT the problem was it never stopped there....

What can I say, it's a yucky situation.

Yes, he did do that, but his behavior would also get ugly from time to time there as well. I have seen a couple incidents personally. And let's be honest, he was doing that stuff to get tips, not to represent the organization he worked for.

I've heard stuff I won't repeat on here. Don't know if it's true,so won't step that way.

Drinking & Driving is public so I'll comment on it. Hate it. No excuse to be smashed and drive.

I know stuff I won't repeat on here, so I'd be surprised if what you heard is far from the truth. And you are right, it isn't correct to step that way regardless.

As to his bugle, it got pretty easy for me to tell if he'd been drinking that day and sometimes even the night before. There were days when he butchered the call every race.

No, it's not irony. Coincidence perhaps, or would have been had the horse won the next race on Whitney day. Definitely not irony. Irony gets used too much in the case of bad luck or coincidence. The ironic fact about the Alanis Morisette's famous song "Ironic" was that nothing in the song was ironic. Sorry for the off topic diversion.

You want irony? How about Amy Winehouse' big hit "Rehab (no,no,no)" and her drinking herself to death at age 27.

No irony there, just a sad loss of a talented young woman.

Things can really get out of hand with drinking. My brother-in-law was an alcoholic. I loved my brother-in-law dearly and I never judged him for his drinking, although my husband and I got him into rehab several times.

The last time he was in rehab, he got thrown out for sneaking out of the building, walking a mile to the nearest convenience store and buying alcohol. They called me and said they caught him under a tree on the property, drunk. There were 2 of the 6 packs (empty!) of Mike's Hard Lemonade next to him. They told us to come pick him up and we did. My husband was furious!

It only got worse after that. He lost everything, his good state job, his girlfriend, his apartment. He was homeless for a long time and we couldn't even find him. He got a 2nd DWI and lost his license and car.

We buried him on April 13, 2015, just 5 months ago. He was only 49 years old. I miss him everyday.

He was the nicest person I ever knew. I never heard him raise his voice or say an unkind word about anyone in the 25 years I knew him. He loved animals. Everybody loved him. Two hundred people showed up for his funeral. He just couldn't get it together. He was able to hide it and do his job well for a very long time before things started going rapidly downhill. I think everyone thinks they have it under control until suddenly it's not.

This story about Sam really makes me sad. I hope that he's able to get help.

Winehouse' "Rehab" is a perfect example of irony (for those that actually know the meaning of the word). FF asked you for your better example of irony. You could have replied with something like this:

"You tease another kid at school for acting so gay, then you go home and your father announces he’s leaving your mother for someone named Jose".

Have a good evening. Oh, and You're Welcome :)

My old man was a professional musician (Local 802) and, although never had a drinking problem, he always told me that he couldn't blow the sax and clarinet right without a couple of shots in him. Also, the profession kind of lends itself to always being around booze and drugs (hard or recreational). Pulling for Sam the Bugler to make a complete recovery.

When an employee of any company is in the public eye, their behavior tends to be more intensely scrutinized.
If Sam Grossman is behaving in a manner that reflects badly on NYRA, the management's hand is more or less being forced to react based on the actions of Grossman himself.

I have no idea how difficult it is to play the instrument, but I would imagine there are a number of musicians out there. Being that he plays the same tune over and over again, I cant imagine it is THAT hard to find a replacement.

I just don't get how this guy is a multiple offender and still gets away with this stuff. In all seriousness, if I show up to work drunk on repeated occasions or drink while working, I would be canned in no time. Yes some celebrities get away with whatever they want, but they are put up with because of the unique talent they have and cant be replaced.

In this case, its not like what he does cant be replaced. Its not like he is Taylor Swift. While I don't think it tarnishes NYRAs image, its not like it is a good thing.

Most of the replacements were kids. There was a girl playing the day I went and she was just fine. I can't imagine he's got too long a rope this time, though I haven't heard and wouldn't say it here even if I did. As I said before, I hope he is going to be better, but to be honest, I doubt it lasts long. And regardless what happens I will never like him.
