With the Saratoga steeplechase races getting started, I was wondering if someone could provide some insight to something which I've wondered about for awhile. It seems like for every steeplechase race I saw at Saratoga last year, a number of horses were very lathered up in the post parade, much more so than normal compared to flat racing. I would think going a longer distance of ground & with a patient temperament that steeplechase horses would be less worked up. Is there any logical reason for this pre-race behavior? Is it just due to equipment they may be wearing (different reins?) causing more lather?
