CAIRO (AP) -- Omar Sharif, the Egyptian-born actor with the dark, soulful eyes who soared to international stardom in movie epics, "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago," died Friday. He was 83.

Forgive me here .. but I thought he died years ago.

I seem to recall that Sharif did public service announcements about the evils of smoking and that he was dying of lung cancer. I thought I had (also) read that these ads wouldn't be played on TV until after his death.

When I saw those ads, I assumed he died.
