Finding the Overlays

You have all heard it from me before, but the key to this game is finding overlays and false favorites. I have been sharing my FF report for a while, now to look at some of the overlays that could be out there.

These are the horses that could produce a positive overlay when I compare my fair odds line to their ML odds.

*How to read this*
R5 - 4 CLOCK STOPPER - 5-1
In race 5 I like the 4 as a possible Overlay, but I have a condition of 5-1. If the horse is not going to go off at 5-1 or better I will not bet it. (Fair odds line) If there are two horses that could produce overlay in same race, I will bet them in order, if the first horse qualifies, there is no bet on the 2nd horse, unless I am getting crazy overlay then I will play both.

*How I bet them*
99% of the time I am betting some kind of WPS wheel on these horses. The baseline that I like to use is a $20 wheel, $4 win / $6 place / $10 show.

Good work with your longshots.

Time for some very contrarian logic:

Look at all your oddslines, and figure out what the win % is for all of your 4/1, 5/1 etc horses is.

If a 4/1 horse should win 20% of his starts, do your 4/1 horses win at 20%?

Then look at your 4/1 horses and check the win % for your 4/1 horses who went off at 3/1. Is the win % of these horses 25% ?
Look at the 4/1 horses who went off at 5/1. Is their win% 20% reflecting your 4/1 odds or is it 16%, reflecting the 5/1 off odds?

My own research has shown that horses who go off at odds higher than my oddsline do significantly worse than my oddsline would imply and do not generate long term profits

Conversely horses who go off at an 'underlay' based on my oddsline win more than expected. Perhaps this has something to do with the the crowds's collective wisdom.

You might also look at ranges of underlay bets.

If your 4/1 goes off at 4/1 does it win enough to be profitable at 3/1, vs going off at 2/1 and winning more races but losing money?

Well I am glad I was gone for most of the day, I put in these bets before leaving this morning and when I first came home it wasn't looking good, but two races made up the difference and we had another positive day!!!

19 races listed
3 races didn't qualify
16 races bet @ $20 ea.
$320 in bets, returned...$406.60
Total profit today = +$86.60

Four straight positive days.....

so far we are up $573.80 w. ROI sitting at even 60%

These fair odds lines are lines aren't something I pulled out of the air, they have come from 5+ years of extensive record keeping. I currently backtest against a database with over 34,000 races in it from all over the country.

That being said we are constantly adjusting what we are doing to create these lines.

This is far and away my personal preference with this bigger longshots.

In a race like today's Belmont 8th, BROADWAY BAY went off at 26.75-1, he came in second and was beat by 5 3/4 lengths and it could have been more. Even with an even money favorite coming in third he paid a nice $22.70 to place and $9.70 to show...all in all it was a nice $116.10 return on a $20 bet!

200.40 profit, bringing 5 day total up to $774.20, with an ROI of 66%
