Nice win in the Diamond Jubilee yesterday. Always good to see American horse do well on turf. He beat some of the best turf sprinters in the world and now surely Hong Kong in Dec beckons.

Also love the fact that this is horse is owned by football player Wes Welker.
I feel like we as a sport have misplayed some opportunities to take advantage of that association, but it was nice to browse ESPN and see several graphics referencing Welker and horseracing.

Nice horse, and a really well timed ride by Frankie Dettori.
IMO, he outrode Australian Craig Williams, who was on the
favorite Brazen Beau. Williams decided to race alone
on the stands' side, and that may have cost them the race.
Dettori is back on his game.
Epsom Derby, and French Oaks wins recently
have boosted his confidence. Good for him.

First American based runner to win a Group 1 on grass overseas in something like 15yrs or so...Golden Pheasant was the last, did that around 1991
(and that's a pretty noteworthy achievement in my book...not a big fan of Wesley Ward, but a sincere congratulations to him on this win)

The connections of Brazen Beau wanted Joao Moreira on him, but the HKJC wouldn't let him go to the UK for the ride, wonder if the race would have been different with him on.

How can the HKJC deny him the ride at Ascot? Do jockeys in HK have to get permission to leave?

Btw, Golden Pheasant never won a G2 in Europe. He won the Prix Neil G2, an Arc prep, and was 2nd, beaten a head, in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud G1. But wasn't he trained in France at the time by Jonathon Pease? I believe he was later sent to Charlie Whittingham in California.
As far as I can tell the previous American trained horse to win a G1 in Europe prior to Ward winning the Prix Morny in 2013 was Fourstarallstar winning the Irish 2000 Guineas G1 in 1991. His trainer was the Irish born and bred Leo O'Brien, but was trained and based at Belmont.

He may have been referencing Golden Pheasant's win in the Japan Cup, which would be a Group 1 overseas.

That would make sense. He was trained by Whittingham and ridden by Gary Stevens in the Japan Cup if I remember correctly.

Yes, the jockey is under contract with the HKJC.

All jockeys are under contract by HKJC. Stable jockeys are as rare as the dodo bird. Jockeys can ride overseas as long as they don't miss a HK meeting unless they are riding a HK trained horse outside.
Precedent was set when Aaron Gryder called it quits a few years back after not getting permission to ride in the Dubai WC.

I was gonna say hasn't Ward won a few Grade 1s over there?

Hopefully Wes Welker and Jim Rome will bring some more professional athletes into the world of horse racing.

They had been talking July Cup at Newmarket,
but Wesley Ward now states that Undrafted is
being aimed at the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock Park.
They want to give him more time to rest after Ascot.
The race is not until early Sept., so after Haydock it will
either be off to Longchamps in Oct. for the Prix de L'Abbaye,
or, more likely, back to Keeneland for the BC Turf Sprint.
A G1, the Betfred is run over a straight 6F on a slightly
stiffer track than Ascot. Pretty flat, but there is a slight
uphill finish at Haydock, so stamina is a factor at the end.
