Why don't this happen in our modern day era. Pharoah vs Chrome or Shared Belief would be epic...

They come across as gimmicks.
There is more to horse racing than match races.
Lousy from a betting standpoint, with little to recommend them.

Give me a quality 10-12 horse field any day.
If those horses you wanted in the match are that good,
they should come close to winning regardless.

Match races are simply a thing of the past. It is one of the good things that they have been almost eliminated, since they not only do not offer any kind of a betting value, but also provide a poor sporting event..

I've never seen the Ruffian match race.
Never want to, either.

Have seen more than my share of horses needing to be put down.
Some live, but mostly on the screen. I try to forget those times.

Sorry for being so morbid---I get the sense you genuinely didn't know about that. There was a huge amount of negative coverage of that tragedy, and no major match races have taken place since then.

The boy-vs-girl jockey match races at Del Mar are really a waste of time.

He had one at Batavia Downs, too. I was there and it was a real festival!
Good crowd, lots of hype, souvenir programs, 25 cent hot dogs....he crushed a 3yo filly.

He did have two against baseball players, beat one got nailed on the wire by the other.

Helped fill the void between Affirmed and AP.

I saw this live and was one of the best moments Iv'e had in Horse Racing. Was truly a classic Race. Most weren't like this...But back then it was special.....for me at least.

I want to see the match race of Miss Musket vs Chris Evert but I can not find it anywhere. That race too was at Hollywood Park like the one with Typecast vs. Convenience.

I haven't seen the Ruffian race, don't want to look for it. I can see where folks would think horse racing is cruel and unusual punishment. People think I'm cruel for training my Labrador retrievers to run hard, hunt hard and swim icy water to retrieve ducks and geese. They are simply bred for it and they're happiest when they're hunting. Sorry, but I don't think a Lab is meant to lay on a couch and eat bon bons. Mine are great house pets but if I am getting ready to take them out they go bonkers to get in the woods or rivers, even in icy February and getting them out is tough. One of my labs was hunting non stop with a broken branch impaled into her front shoulder that had to be surgically removed. The adrenalin takes over. Same with Ruffian I suppose.

I hope race fans (and others) can take solace in knowing horses are meant to run, not tied to a post somewhere and looked at like a painting. Unfortunately injuries will happen. The humane thing to do is take dominion of them and put them out of their misery quickly and humanely. Just my opinion.

Watched it at the time and it ended any desire to see match races. Still bothers me to this day. Ruffian was a great horse.

Funny how the people who are really pushed to the brink, like Navy Seals, Green Berets or Army Rangers, don't get to run on Lasix or Bute....

Why don't we get PETA or some other bleeding heart campaigners to protest those Physical Regimens... :D

Horses are bred to run, and most of them love to run....It's in their DNA...

Watching wild Mustangs on the open range, is truly a thing to behold...

especially as it was touted and promoted as a female vs male thing - like that tennis match with? bobby riggs / billie jean king

all the feminists / attendees / viewers on live television were bummed out
