Actually the first Memorial day was May 5th 1868. It was to Honor the Union Soldiers whose : (quoting from the official
proclamation)

lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and thier deaths a tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms

It was presented to the president by John Logan , commander in chief. In Washington DC, Headquarters of the grand Army of the Union.

The 30th of may is designated for the purpose of strewing of flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of our comrades who died in defense of thier country During the late rebellion

It would be 7 decades before it became a more broadly accepted way of honoring all of our hero's. But truth in fact. It was to honor the Union dead and a unified republic.

You can read his entire order here.

No Problem. Its nice to know the truth about things. Like that little diddy I threw out last week about Massachusetts being represented by a Stripe on the US flag.

Juts for the record. Its the First question on the US citizens exam. Its 15 questions. Thats the First. I suppose if they want new citizens to know that. Others should as well...
