Bad news....Batavia will not re-open. OTB lost too much money and can't afford to run the track or even put in the slot machines, which were supposed to open in May.
A bookie losing money! OTB is a perfect example of why you don't hire all your idiot relatives. WROTB could not complete with a 10 year old's lemonade stand.
The place was packed the last two years, they had a cash cow in slots legalized, and still they managed to blow it becase they are idiots.
Sheeez.

Tom,

If Batavia Downs is closing, that means the announcer, John Bothe will be out of a job again. If the Big M was smart, they would release their current announcer and hire John back. Now the question is, how smart are the management at the Big M? Or, will they still be bull-headed, and not try to hire John Bothe back?

In my opinion, John is a better announcer than the present one they have at the Meadowlands. I think John Bothe puts more enthusiasm and pizzazz into his race calls, than the current announcer at the Big M.

The weekly Finger Lakes "A Day at the Races" radio show is on at noon Sunday-Todd Height, on of the hostws is the track handicapper for Batavia. I will call in and see what I can find out.
Worst case, I will go to Finger Lakes this weekend and find him in person-he is always there.
Ya know, this was the year I was going to get serious at Batavia- spent two years building my database, speed charts, pace numbers.......D'OH!

A racetrack with slots already ok'd by the State....you would think there are many investors out there willing to grab this racetrack in a NY minute!

Ken Warkenton and Sam Mckee

Ken is getting more inaccurate by the day and Sam is just plain boring..

Batavia will not in 2004. They hope to somehow be able to afford to install the slots so that they can re-open in 2005.
Would you loan money to a broke bookie?
