Was thinking about the 1987 Belmont, didn't Alysheba only need to run 3rd to collect 5 mil?

I think it was a million bonus if he ran third. If he won it might have been 5 million as a TC winner, though from memory, think it was 3 million, could be wrong though.

They used a points system then for bonus money and think Bet Twice by winning and Aly running fourth had more points in the TC races so BT got the million bonus. Tough beat for Van Berg as he narily missed for third.

You sir, are correct.

I was thinking the points system didn't come along for a year or two later.

One of my buddies made a killing in the '87 Belmont, tossing Alysheba with the "off lasix" angle. Of course Alysheba did go on to compete very well and win the BC Cup Classic without lasix the following year.

1987 was a hell of nice crop of 3YOs. Alysheba, Bet Twice, Cryptoclearance (who I played in the TC races), Lost Code, Gone West, Gulch, and probably a few others I've forgotten about.....best crop in I've ever seen, IMHO....

Sounds like nascar. Win two out of three and lose.

, IMHO....

There was a good article in the local paper a few days ago about Spend a Buck’s 1985 3yrOld season where he skipped the Preakness after winning the Derby. I can only surmise that the bonus written about in this 1987 NY Times article was instituted because of Spend a Buck.
