So, as one who, probably like many, had both the :5: and :7: in the 3rd and 4th spots of my super tickets, I'm scratching my head wondering how neither DORTMUND, DANZIG MOON, or FIRING LINE filled the place (or even the show) holes in this race. Obviously, I needed one of them there to collect.
Since they looked so uncomfortable with the footing (especially FIRING LINE), is it possible that they had the wrong kind of racing plates on for the sudden off track, or did they just not "like" it? Are all shoes the same nowadays, or are there modified "caulks" allowed?

Not sure, but I think mud caulks and turn downs are no longer used. In NY anyway.... I looked at the NY Gaming Commission website under rules of racing . I can't find anything on shoeing.
Looked at NYRA as well. Can't find anything there either.

Dirt and Turf Shoe Rules
A horse may not be permitted to start if it has shoes on the front hooves that have toe grabs that are greater than four (4) millimeters in height or contain bends, jar calks, or any other traction device.

Yeah, I go back to the days of looking at the "shoe board" at Saratoga and using it to good advantage, especially up there. So is it all "one size fits all" kind of shoes now, no matter the weather? Really bummed out at the fact that so many of the "competitors" were freaked by the slop or the rainstorm.

I never bet a horse who was weaving in the lane in his last race. I expected Firing line to finish exactly where he did.

I still watch for info on wearing "bends" at the New York tracks when the weather is wet, usually on screen around 10 minutes to post, but have not been able to find info for many of the other tracks. I believe New York banned mud caulks a while ago and now allow up to 1/4 inch bends but no more than that. I also remember years ago, on Brisnet, when the Triple Crown races were being run, they used to include "frog" info on the horses which I thought was also helpful when tracks were muddy/sloppy.
Before someone asks, that is the area inside the foot/shoe. The larger the frog the less the foot sank into the mud allowing a little less resistance while running. I'm only guessing but this could be one reason some horses pass the "off track" breeding down through their foals. Big feet.
Knowing any information like this and having knowledge of the top "off track" sires is always helpful in situations like this when a sudden heavy rain comes with no time for horses to make shoe changes prior to post. Turf runners will just scratch out but when it is a million dollar race, they run and take their chances, leaving most of us scurrying around trying to find answers. Fortunately for me, I was one who thought the race offered no value and only invested a token $6 in supers. I also singled American in DD's and pick -3's, catching the last DD, but unfortunately after singling Ageless in the 11th, used the "wrong" McGaughey in the 12th. :bang:

Not sure what was up with Firing Line, but I think Dortmund was done in by the pace.

From the Bris pp's these are the off track breeding numbers--
1-American--108
2-Dortmund--107
3-Mr. Z--111
4-Danzig--110
5-Tale--109
6-Bod--104
7-Divining--112
8-Firing--100
All are pretty close except Firing Line.
I looked this up because I wanted to see Tale of Verse's number to see if it was why he finished stronger than the others.
