In the last 40 years (1975-2014) that the Derby winner raced in the Preakness 16 of them won the Preakness. Thats 40% of the time. Some great horses were included in this stat: Slew, Sec, Bid, Affirmed, Sunday Silence, etc.

So, 24 out of the last 40 Derby winners lost the Preakness. Most Derby winners lose the Preakness (60% of the time).

There were a few years when the Derby winner did not go in the Preakness:
Grindstone 1996, Spend A Buck 1985 and Sunnys Halo 1983 (if I remember correctly) did not run in the Preakness.

They were all speed horses that won the Derby and Preakness. That tips the statistics in favor of American Pharoah.

Pleasant Colony was a deep closer and some others were more midpack runners than early runners.

Sec = Secretariat? Not in the timeframe. 1973.

A lot of times the best horse losses the Derby because of a bad trip and comes back to win the Preakness.

the Preakness payouts are sure to disappoint... gonna have to hit the tri and bet it heavy

Pharoah W/ Firing Line, Dortmund W ALL and pound it hard

That's probably the best idea.

Everyone else will have the same idea. I don't think that trifecta will break 3 digits. Firing Line might upset.

eh your completely right, he could and im gonna have a little something on it, but right now i think my plan is trying to figure out what kind of bet i have to make with american pharoah on top that if i hit it and he wins it pays for my trip to Belmont with a triple crown on the line...

Just bypass the Preakness and hope AP wins it. Then you can get a price on another contender in the Belmont because everyone will have all those uncashed AP Win tickets and AP on top to keep as souvenirs.

Looks like you are spot on.

Payouts for the Curlin, Street Sense, Hard Spun Preakness (last time Derby Top 3 in both KD and Preakness):

$1 Tri paid 25, Exacta was a shade over $10
