The horse that would otherwise be the favorite, in this case American Pharoah.

The betting public is good at picking winners but not at overcoming the takeout.

As Don Henley put it:

"If dirt were dollars,
we'd all be in the black" ;)

If low odds are the only thing prohibiting you from making a straight bet on a contender, what if your 7/2 or 5/1 was 20/1? Would you still bet on the favorite to win if you would get paid 20-1 if he wins?

I'd bet 10 horses to win.

Cost me 20 bucks, pays back $42 if I get it right. Heck, even a boob like me has a better than 50/50 chance of picking the Derby winner if I get 10 tries.

I would bet AP at 20-1 for sure. He still wouldn't be my only bet though.

Is there anyone who wouldn't bet AP at 20-1?

Not many.

Kind of like giving somebody $1,000,000 to make a single wager on the Derby. What would it be?

I would imagine the majority of people would make a $1,000,000 Show bet on American Pharoah. There would be plenty that would take Dortmund to Show. I doubt the rest of the field would even get 20% of the action. Maybe not even 10%.

Now that I think about it, couldn't I bet all 20 horses for $40, and get back $42 no matter who won?

I'd bet every penny I could scrape together that way, and take my 5% instant free money.

It's like 5% take out in my favor.

If I'm limited to one horse to win at 20/1, it's Dortmund. Clearly.

Is there anyone who wouldn't bet AP at 20-1? Me, because I believe only one horse will win (unless there is a deadheat) and whether the odds are 1-20 or 20-1 my wager does not change except for a "no bet" on the race when my choice is less than 3-1.

Wow over thinking the question much guys?

You nailed it because when you are betting 5-6 figures to win you are probably very keyed in one horse at a particular set of odds.
