I'm going to shoot down pistol pete and here's why. Hear me out on this one.

There are mostly two types of nicknames, nicknames that were solely invented due to a first initial of the person's legal name, or something that rhymes with the person's name. If Pete Maravich was Joe maravich, he wouldn't have been pistol Joe, so i have to take the nickname with a grain of salt. Now, Big Baby Davis is an amazing nickname because if he wasn't Glen Davis and he was Joe Smith, he would still be "Big Baby".

So, when determining how good a nickname is, ask yourself if the person was joe smith would he still have the same exact nickname.

What about "The Juice" O.J. Simpson?

If his nickname was "On time" O.J. Simpson, ok, sure. But O.J. "The Juice"?

A nickname is a nickname. The OP didn't specify certain types of nicknames, as a matter of fact 4 of the 5 he listed had either the first name or last name of the person. You just can't stop complaining or arguing in every post you make, can you? Is your life really that miserable?

I make a good point, some nicknames are REAL nicknames, some are just manufactured due to the person's legal name, which has nothing to do with 'who that person is'

I thought you, of all people, would say "great points SRU" but no, you have to complain and whine in every thread, you must be living a miserable life, cmon Raynman, cheer up charlie, life is good.

Bad nickname for a bad guy and a terrible player. You have to EARN your nickname thru quality play and being a quality person...you know, unless the nickname isnt' a flattering one. If you are Mathieu, you don't get the privilege of having a fancy nickname. Sorry POT, had to shoot this one down. :D

Most of my complaining is directed at those doing the most complaining, if you care to check my posts. As I said, a nickname is a nickname, plain and simple. The great ones are the ones that immediately bring forth memories of great performers, in their chosen activity. "Pistol Pete" Maravich certainly meets that criteria, he would fire them off like a 9mm auto.

In deference to today, Derby Day, I offer the Hall of Fame rider, Ted Atkinson (Tom Fool's jockey) -- known in his day as the Slasher.

In fairness, Atkinson did not like this nickname and preferred his other equally charming sobriquet: the Professor.

Atkinson is the grandfather of the great Caton Bredar for those interested in such matters.

If Pete Maravich was Fred Maravich, would he be "pistol Fred"?

Answer, no.

Nicknames that would change if the person had a different legal name aren't as good as ones that do not.

Some classic Spurs nicknames:

George "Iceman" Gervin
Billy "The Whopper" Paultz
Mike "Sugar" Gale
"Captain Late" James Silas
"The Wild Helicopter" Edgar Jones
Larry "Special K" Kenon
Tim Duncan "The Big Fundamental"
David "The Admiral" Robinson
Kahwi "The Claw" Leonard
Robert Horry "Big Shot Rob" or "Big Shot Bob"
"The A Train" Artis Gilmore
Avery "The Little General" Johnson
Chuck "The Rifleman" Person
Matt Bonner "The Red Rocket"

Tim Duncan and David Robinson together were called the "Twin Towers", following in the footsteps of former Rockets Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson.

Also, the 80's saw a collection of Spurs who were nicknamed the "Bruise Brothers"...The players that made up the Bruise Brothers were Dave Corzine, Reggie Johnson, Paul Griffin, Mark Olberding, Kevin Restani and George Johnson.

And to finish the Spurs nickname history.....in the old Hemisfair Arena there was a group of rowdy fans known as the "Baseline Bums".

Answer, no.

Right he likely would be called Firing Fred due to the excessive desire to use alliteration by the media

LOL good one. Someone mentioned "Big Daddy" and "The Snake", famous dragstrip drivers, but left off Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney.

A little known fact that I will now expose to all my friends here on PA. :)

I highlighted Artis Gilmore because he played college ball for those Dolphins of Jacksonville University.

Jacksonville played UCLA in the 1970 (?) NCAA basketball championship.

The team had three stars, if you will: Artis Gilmore, Penbroke Burrows III and Rex Morgan. Gilmore was 7-foot plus, Burrows was an even 7-foot.

The World Trade Center project was in full bloom 1968-70 before it officially opened in 1973, yet I am pretty sure Gilmore and Burrows got their nickname because of the WTC as they were known as The Twin Towers.
