With a huge field, like the Derby, I do some things different. This year the favorites looked so good in the preps they are hard to separate. For my exactas, trifectas, and maybe supers, I am picking probably 6 maybe 7 horses. From that group, I gotta settle on 2 to key in the Win and Place spot. How does everyone else approach the verticals in this race?

I will be swinging for the fences this year. Trifectas and Supers mostly. Ladders on my top contenders who are 20-1 or more..

I like to pick a horse for top and bottom for supers.
Example: frosted/x/x/Danzig Moon

You can make 4 tickets and have one key win place and the other 3rd fourth.

Exactly, thanks for the more clear layout.

I never thought of it that way. I guess a backup would be a cold A-B exacta.

I was going to do my Super this way: < $24

0.10 SUP A1,A2,A3 / A1,A2,A3 / A1,A2,A3 / B,C,D,E,F,G,M,N,O,P,Q $6.60
0.10 SUP A1,A2,A3 / A1,A2,A3 / B,C,D,E,F,G,M,N,O,P,Q / A1,A2,A3 $6.60
0.10 SUP A1,A2,A3 / B,C,D,E,F,G,M,N,O,P,Q / A1,A2,A3 / A1,A2,A3 $6.60
0.10 SUP B,C,D,E,F,G / A1,A2,A3 / A1,A2,A3 / A1,A2,A3 $3.60

A1,A2,A3 = prime contenders at a price who I think will finish in all of the super spots
BCDEFG = contenders who I think will finish in the money, maybe win
MNOPQ = "clunkers", odds and ends, the ones I hate/don't consider

No dimers.

Why not just shoot me now?

The race itself won't have dimers or they are not accepting dimers at the track (CD)?

Here's what my plan is for now.

Exactas

ABC/DEFG (H)

Mubtaahij/ABC

ABC/Mubtaahij

Tris .50 each

ABC/ABCDEFG (H)/ABCDEFG (H)

Mubtaahij/ABC/ABCDEFG (H)

ABC/Mubtaahij/ABCDEFG (H)

ABC/ABCDEFGH/Mubtaahij

H is El Kabeir pending on where he draws.

This. It keeps the windows from being clogged when 100,000 people are at the track. I suspect CD likes those monster payoffs too but I would think dimers would add significantly to the pool just like dollar exacta boxes helped boost those pools. You can still play a 50 cent trifecta. I love that wager.

$1 triple ......1 with/2,3,4,5,6,7,8/2,3,4,5,6,7,8 costs $42

$1 super......1 with/2,3,4,5,6,7,8/2,3,4,5,6,7,8/2,3,4,5,6,7,8 cost $210

$50 exacta 1 with/2,3,4,5,6,7,8 cost $350

Dimes are my bread and butter but I do like the dollar minimum for the Derby. Makes for a bigger challenge with bigger rewards. I haven't hit one yet but it would be nice to pay off the mortgage.

Multiple tickets going very deep on the 3/4 spots on supers. Probably something like 3/5/8/10. Will pool my supers with friends with no dimers.

The tri's will have some skinny's and some deep, using somewhat of the same AB Keys, but a lot of C's under.
