Why is it that the horseracing industry in North America, can't provide the same quality data that, for example, Hong Kong provides? For example, take a look at the link below of past incident extracts for today's entries in Hong Kong.

Also, take a look at the results charts on the following link from the Hong Kong Jockey club. Notice that each chart has a link to the race replay, in 56kb or broadband. And more importantly, notice that when you watch the replay that there are actually people standing along the rail watching the race--I assume they bet the race too.

Also, take a look at the trackworks pages... which publish split times for the individual works.

And finally, don't miss the note at the bottom of the charts, i.e. [i]"Call our Hotline 1817 within the time specified by the Jockey Club to register if you've won more than HK$5 million." Which I think is about US$640,000.

Hello Que,,,Maybe you can confirm the ###,,,It seems i read where Happy Valley Handle per day runs into 100Million plus,,,,This would be more than the total for all the Thorobred tracks in the USA,,,,I find it amazing the size of the pools,,,,Thanks,,,,Rex You:D

Rexdale,

This is what I found on the internet regarding racing handle for 1999--Source: International Statistical Survey of Horse Racing and 1999 Statistics, compiled by the Societe d'Encouragement and presented at the 33rd Internnational Conference of Racing Authorities, Paris, France, October 2, 2000.

Country Races Handle Per Race
Australia 21,805 $7,571,860,000 $347,253
Hong Kong 658 $10,747,020,000 $16,332,857
Japan 26,550 $42,033,220,000 $1,583,172
United States 54,644 $13,724,650,000 $251,164
Thailand 500 $125,710,000 $251,420

All figures in US$

It appears that the average betting handle per race in the US is comparable to Thailand's. But what "we" lack in numbers, we more than make up for in volume.

To check it out I entered a bookmaking shop the night prior to the opening of racing at Happy Valley. Got scared and left. Never saw so many people cramed together reading forms and smoking?????
Hong Kong newspaper has entire section of nearly 20 pages relating to entries and results.
Someone on this board asked about feed recently. Hong Kong papers report eating habits. Similar but not as much in Australia.
Love it,
