The man was an institution in racing. Stature of Charlie Whittingham.

He will be missed.

I've been playing SoCal religiously since 2001 and Mike Mitchell was a force to be reckoned with. I believe he is the all-time winning trainer at Del Mar.

In 2012 when Camp Victory won the GR1 Triple Bend . D'Amato and the
Owners were all in tears . Mike was recovering from his surgery .
D'Amato tearfully said , Mike did all the work !.

Those claiming battles he had with Bobby Frankel & Gary Jones in the late 70's-early 80's were memorable.

I lived in Arcadia during the 70s when he was getting started. For a long time whenever he claimed a maiden it was money in the bank next out. I got to talk to him once while we were both waiting for a table at a Del Mar restaurant. He wanted to upgrade his stock, but he was being categorized as a claiming trainer. Well, he finally did that later in his career and he did a fine job. A genuinely nice man and I am saddened to hear of his passing at such a young age.

Thought he had beaten his tumor. Damn shame such a good trainer and family man.

Cancer sucks. I lost my Grammy two years ago this April 1st. Not making this about me, just sharing that cancer touches SO many. I wish someone would find a cure.

In the mornings at Clocker's Corner he always wore a ball cap with a Bible verse on the front, it was Proverbs 21:31.

The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord.

Kurt Hoover put it well. "The best training job Mike Mitchell ever did was when he readied Phil D'Amato to take over his barn."

Mike Mitchell will be missed.
He was a wonderful man.
We will miss him on the paddock benches where he would often sit.
I was out there yesterday and could have sworn I could almost see him there.
Public memorial service will be this Monday afternoon at Santa Anita in the Turf Club.
RIP our Mike.
