Looks like a recipe for offense today in Denver. Granted, 10 1/2 is about as high a total as one sees nowadays. I suspect it won't be high enough.

1. Both pitchers are flyball pitchers. Coors has as much territory to cover and with the altitude, I see a lot of balls in the gap.

2. Jason Hammel, who used to pitch for the Rockies, hasn't pitched there since 2011. Pitchers tend to forget they have to work extra hard at finishing their breaking pitches to get any break at all. Only 4 Colorado players have faced Hammel, and they put a beating on him; 44 at bats and 13 extra base hits. Rockies hitters have swung the bat well so far, and that should continue.

3. Kyle Kendrick, a journeyman who found himself as the Rockies opening day starter, is probably brimming with confidence following 6 shutout innings over a solid Brewers lineup. Big mistake. Even All-Star pitchers get embarrassed by Coors, believing their great stuff can overcome the elements. Kendricks' numbers against Cubs hitters aren't bad, but he's never faced them at Coors. Kendrick is a pitch to contact guy, and gave up 14 fly ball outs to Milwaukee last week.

4. Slight over bias to umpire Cedarstrom, 32-25 to the over since 2013.

5. Its still early but at the moment, the wind is blowing out at 13 MPH. Not that the hitters will need any help.

Game went over by the time the 6th inning was over. The starting pitchers combined to get 3 hits themselves, and Dexter Fowler had 2 triples by the 2nd inning. Listening to some of the broadcast on XM, I had to laugh when they talked about how confident Kendrick felt approaching the start; coming off a strong outing. Coors Field has a way of punishing pitcher hubris.

Cubs -140 over Reds

Lineups out and no Hamilton or Mesaraco for Cincinnati. Lester's biggest weakness is not holding runners on and giving up stolen bases. Hamilton being out is big. Cubs hitters have some good numbers vs Leake. Minus 140 is about as heavy a chalk as I will go.

I think it would be a bigger deal if he was a right hander. A lefty can always see the runner on first. If the lead is too big, just step off. He didn't make one pickoff throw all of 2014 and had a pretty good season.

I’m not sure if you caught the Jays game last night, but the Jays installed a new surface for this season. The new surface is painfully slow, any ball that was hit on the ground was dying immediately, and easily picked off by the infielders. Groundballs that normally squeaked through the infielders were being gobbled up without much effort, so it’s safe to say that there will be a lot of low scoring games at home, unless the Jays get into the longball.

Until the linemakers figure this bias out, i would exploit this bias and go UNDER for most home games. The one thing i would keep in mind is the Jays can easily exploit weak starting pitching, other than that i would go under at home.

White Sox/Indians Under 7 1/2

The total in the Danks/Bauer matchup last July was 7. Colder weather now, no Brantley or Gomez for Cleveland, and Garcia replaced in WS lineup by slap hitting Shucks. Early start and an ump with a small under bias (44-54 under last few years).

Like Mark Buehrle tonight, but i have a feeling that the Jays aren't in a very good mood after losing two games, and they are going to light up Ramirez tonight.

I listened to a couple of interviews from the Jays and they said they don't have sore hips after the game like previous years, but they foresee their run production being affected by the surface.

Hutchinson figures to be the main beneficiary, as he's a pure groundball pitcher. Buehrle really isn't a groundballer, but since he pitches to contact, it probably will help him also.

Interesting the total came out at 8 1/2, and has been bet up to 9.

Bumgarner is a favorite go against early on for a number of bettors. Many want to see how he handles the 270 plus innings (counting postseason) last year.

One play for me today:

White Sox +117 over Cleveland (Carrasco). This isn't a play on Noesi, who certainly has his own issues. Its against the Indians and Carrasco. Carrasco's last start was a week ago vs the White Sox, and he was taken off on a stretcher in 1st inning after taking a line drive to the face. Maybe there's no psychological carryover. But he's going to have to prove that to me first. Also, Cleveland suffered a very tough loss last night, as their closer blew a 3 run lead in 9th inning; wasting a great performance from Trevor Bauer.

Reds/Brewers Under 8 1/2

Milwaukee cannot hit. Gomez, Lucroy, Gennett out, and Braun is either still hurt, or can't adapt to no PEDs. But that's only part of the equation. The Reds lineup today looks completely impotent. Mesaraco has been hurt, but Pena isn't even behind plate. 3rd string weak hitting guy behind plate. No Todd Frazier. Cosart hitting 2nd and Brandon Phillips cleanup tells me this lineup is going to struggle. Averages are deceiving. Reds beat Brewers 16-10 a couple days ago to distort both teams averages. Median runs for each team this season? Reds 3 Brewers 2.

Valuist
04-25-2015, 08:59 AM
Of course the impotent bats of Cincy & Milw kept that game under.

Gotta feel for those who bet the Under in the Astros/A's game. Its 0-0 after 9 full innings. Top of 10th, Houston plates 2 runs. Bottom of 10, Oakland manages to tie game up at 2. Top of 11, Stros come back with 3 runs. Bottom of 11, A's get 2 more to push game over the total. That would be a tough beat. Keuchel pitches 9 innings of 2 hit shutout baseball, and gets a no-decision. Gregerson comes on in relief for an inning, gives up 3 hits and 2 runs, and vultures the win.

Taking Cubs +119 (Hendricks) over St. Louis (Lyons). St Louis has won 4 straight one-run games, and their bullpen has been very heavily used. Rosenthal finally got a day off after pitching on three straight days, but the entire bullpen is really spent. I think tonight may be the first time we actually see a groundball pitcher going at the Rogers Centre with the new surface. The Jays don't really have any, but Wade Miley is a groundballer. Granted, he's in terrible form, but it will be interesting to see if he has a big form turnaround tonight.

I probably should have mentioned that line could move the wrong way.
There was a trend, probably popular with the public, that said "over".
The math said "under".
The under got bet very early, then it went back the other way.

That was an easy over.

Today we are taking the opposite side, going UNDER 7. Lineups out and no Holliday, no Molina, Jay on DL for Cards, and Granderson gets day off for offensively impotent Mets. Blowout last night meant rest for the important bullpen guys.

I may end up piggybacking Horses For Course's play on the LaD/SF game. I agree this number will end up at 5 1/2. All of a sudden, the Dodgers can't hit. 2 combined runs in last 4 games. And Kershaw isn't gonna allow much in that big park. Both bullpens good.

Won yesterday as the Giants/Rocks game flew over the total, despite being a 1-0 game in the 6th inning.

Twins/White Sox Under 7 1/2 (-120)

Two flyball pitchers, wind blowing in from RF at about 13 MPH to knock down fly balls, and Doug Eddings, 14-20 under since start of 2014, is behind the plate.

Very fortunate to win the Under 7 1/2 as the score was 4-3 Twins in the 4th inning. Neither team could score any more.

Lets stay with the hot team, the Twins +120, as they have won 10 straight games vs LH starters.

A winner yesterday, and things have been going very well in MLB.

Detroit -110 (Price) over Oakland

Oakland is horrific at hitting lefties; .212 BA .280 SP vs lefties, as opposed to .269 and .424 vs RH pitchers. Price is certainly one of the better lefties in MLB.

I made the same wager, the Jays record on the road is terrible on top of all that, 8-15.

We lost a tough one, blowing a 4-1 lead and Colabello finishes it off with a 2 run bomb in 9th.

Hard not to root for a guy like Colabello, who's played in independent leagues, had a bit of a shot with Minnesota last year, then they dump him. He's hitting around .370 and with some power. Great story.

It was a tough day all around, i had my ass handed to me with the horses and with the sportsbook. There's always tomorrow...

Colabello has been a pleasant surprise, from the moment he got called up he has been hitting the snot out of the ball. As well, Donaldson has been playing like a beast for the Jays this season, i think Oakland got hosed on that deal, now if we could only straighten out the pitching.

Should be a good pitching duel on Saturday with Sanchez/Gibson.

Just a heads up, Scott Copeland was called up for a spot start to give Aaron “Dirty” Sanchez some extra rest. Copeland – 3 Innings pitched in MLB. Copeland is 4-1 with a 1.97 ERA in seven starts with Triple-A Buffalo.

As for Miami, Tom Koehler – Interleague Starts – 4-2 with a 5.02 ERA, 54 Hits in 50 1/3 innings pitched.

I have an uneasy feeling about this one, at best i would take the Moneyline on the Jays, the bats are red hot right now and i think the bullpen gets involved early. On the flipside, Stanton is a beast! I wish they would stop pitching to him.

I should probably ignore this one but i will take a swing.

Good call H4C on the Jays game last night.

Niese has had a tough go of it in interleague play, compiling a 4.91 ERA in 91 2/3 innings. The last time he faced the Jays, the lefthander gave up 8 runs in 3 innings pitched.

Hutch had a tough start in his last outing, and i expect him to bounce back today but a 5.75 ERA leads me to believe that this game will be an OVER.

The Jays have been limited in their production over the last 2 games against the Mets, and i expect the boys to come out swinging today, especially being back home at the Rogers Centre.

Mets (Niese) / Jays (Hutchison) Over +8.5

I was torn between the Over/Under or taking Hutch to win by 2, either way it's a good play.

Charlie Morton has a lifetime record of 5 wins and 24 losses in day games and the Pirates are in the role of -161 favorite. Wanna talk form? Morton lasted 2/3 of an inning in a start earlier in week vs Washington and was tagged for NINE earned runs. Needless to say, Atlanta is the only way to bet this game today.

He's been very good but the real test for these pitchers who start out lights out, is how they perform the second time they face teams. Once hitters have had a chance to face them, it changes things.

Reds (Cueto) -113 over Cleveland (Carrasco)

Despite having the 2nd best ERA in the NL between 2011-now, Cueto still doesn't get the respect he should. And Carrasco probably gets too much respect. He always has good strikeout numbers so the Saber guys love him. But he also is capable of giving up hard contact.

Just an observation, but you have to consider the Padres (+115)
over the Giants tonight. Starting pitcher for the Padres, Despaigne,
has faced the Giants a number of times, this year and last, and has
given them fits. His record against other teams is so-so, but the
Giants can't seem to figure him out.

98 Giants batters faced, and they're hitting around .140 against him.
Posey is 0 for 12....I'm thinking he gets a well earned break tonight.

Despaigne has 18 innings in the books v. SF, giving up 3 earned runs.
Earlier this year he beat Bumgarner on the road.
Heston has faced SD 3 times. 16 innings, 10 earned runs allowed.

I'm a Giants fan, but they have their work cut out tonight.

Agreed. I have a good friend who's a die hard Giant fan and he says they love fastball pitchers, but when a junkballer like Despaigne faces them, they really struggle.

I went in the opposite direction, i took the Over in this game.

The Jays bats have been cold over the last little while and after last night i expect the bats to start lighting it up again.

Both Gray and Doubront got lit up last time out and with the O/U being 7 i expect that number to be surpassed between the two teams, i thought 7 was a bit of a gift. I expect the long ball to come into play tonight with the Jays power hitters coming into form again. Donaldson will have a big game tonight and the Jays are due for another streak, 3/4 after the all star break.

Nice call
Heavy lumber to lay on Kershaw, but the run line covered easily.

I feel like the Dos Equis guy here.
I don't often bet run lines, but when I do.....

Never lay a run and a half at home - it's a recipe for disaster.
I have no problem doing it on the road with a dominant pitcher, though.
A quality starter has an advantage over an inferior one, regardless of venue.

Reds/Rockies Over 11

Descalifini pitches in Coors for the first time. This is usually a learning experience for pitchers making their first trip to Denver. And Butler, going for Colorado, has terrible control allowing 5 walks per 9 IP. Pitchers realize they are going to allow a lot more hits there; why compound problems by issuing walks?
