From the Palm Beach Post

At 8:06 p.m. Wednesday night in a quiet part of Palm Beach Kennel Club, about four hours after the greyhounds had stopped racing for the day a 67 year old man from Detroit had the moment every bettor dreams about. He made a big score. When Chickster won the 8th race at Hollywood Park in L.A. at 9-1 odds, the man - who didn't want to give his name - knew he was looking a a huge payday with his winning Pick Six ticket through the track's simulcast network. Ten minutes later, he found out how huge - $1.312.808.60, making it the richest parimutel ticket ever purchased in Palm Beach County. The winner's reaction ?
"I just said, "Well, look at this. Even a drowning man comes up for air" the man said. The gambler also had 10 consolation tickets, worth about $3,500 each, bringing his winnings on the race to $1,346.762. After having about 25 percent taken out for tax purposes, he was given a police escort to his car with his check for $1,018.561. "I knew it was going to be a nice ticket" he said. "Never in a million years did I think it was going to be this big" The man said he bet $9,600 on the race -- he usually bets between $15,000-$20,000 a day -- with the Pick Six winner coming on a $360 ticket. He was alive with four horses (two of them were part of a 4-5 entry) going into the final race. Stop the Talking ($15.80), Western Blondy ($13), Dawns Angel ($13.60), Jewel of the Year ($5) and Sigint ($25.20), the long shot in a field of seven. The man said he used a "bullet" - horse racing parlance for using only one horse in a race -- on one horse Jewel of the Year, in the fourth leg. As fortunate as that sounds, it was some good luck he had earlier in the day, that paved the way for his big hit. The man said he benefited froma horse being disqualified at Belmont Park, enabling him to cash winning tickets of $9,500 on Pick Six and Pick Four wagers. He used the money to play Hollywood's Pick Six.
"I knew I was going to play loose as a goose after my horse got put up at Belmont" the man said. "I always feel like you've got a chance to win these kind of bets if you make a decent investment. You can't do it with $60.00"
The man deposited the check in the bank Thursday morning, but it likely won't sit there long. Asked if he bought himself anything special to celebrate his big score, he laughed "Yeah, I went out and got another Daily Racing Form so I can play again today"

At the amounts he bets, there is no guarantee he will have a winning year this year:D

The Ohio guy owns the current Ohio Horse of the Year Devil Time. He wouldn't say how much he invested in the ticket.

How about that other guy? I know he wagers a lot but can you imagine going home? His wife is probably asking him how his day went. "Well I hit Pic 6 number one in the early afternoon and then had kind of a dull day until this Hollywood thing came in. Overall I'd say it was a good day."

Winning Ticket in the Pick Six Nearly Canceled
-Bill Christine

One of the two winning tickets Wednesday in Hollywood Park's record pick-six payoff was held by an Ohio businessman who came close to canceling his bets.

Brad Anderson, a construction-company executive who lives near Beulah Park in Grove City, said he made two trips to the track, and the second time he considered withdrawing his bets. Anderson thought the six races were so tough to handicap they might result in a pool carry-over to Thursday. Only one of the six winners was a favorite.

Anderson stuck with his bets, and he and a bettor in Florida correctly picked all six winners to collect $1,312,808.60 apiece, before taxes. The Florida player won with a $360 ticket at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. Anderson's first ticket, which produced the six winners, cost $5,760; his second ticket was a $1,276 investment.

Anderson, 43, is a horse owner whose Devil Time was Ohio's horse of the year in 2003.

Why must someone who bets $20G every day be a rich guy?

Well...

If he is a loser, the answer is obvious. You can't lose money you don't have, so he must be well off.

If he is a winner, assume he wins at only 3% per day. That is $600 per day profit. Playing 5 days a week, 50 weeks per yer, would yield an income of $150,000 per year. Maybe not considered rich by some, but not too shabby.

This means the guy cashed pick-6 tickets at BOTH Belmont and Hollywood on the same day. That's pretty amazing to me in and of itself. I've never heard of anyone doing that before.

Give or take a few dollars, they both bet about the same amount of money. Like the man said, you ain't going to hit it with a $60 punch. For those who live by ROI it has to be a hell of a return.
