While CJ is still recovering from eye surgery, here's a permanent spot each week for noting the time his TVG segment will air. Many have asked. Also included is the link to his blog written each week giving notes and TimeformUS figures assigned.
Just posted at TVG is this week's review.

I asked CJ if he could provide a schedule of his appearances so I could just set the DVR....
At least this gives a recap....So due to his eye surgery, no appearance this week?
Thanks grits!

Any chance TVG can post these segments on youtube? They only have one but it shouldn't be hard for them. Even if it was done of their web page I'm sure it would get more hits than almost anything else they post except those that have the word "free".

Sort of like the Goods News - Bad News format.
Optimistic View: Though a slow race, Moreno was wide on both turns through solid fractions.
Realistic View: This was a slow race for G2 older males; downgrade entire race

This one paid some dividends at Keeneland just now:
G2 San Carlos Stakes Dirt 7 Furlongs 4yo+
Top 3: Wild Dude 107, Kobe’s Back 111, Conquest Two Step 108
Pace: Very Slow
Noteworthy: Winner awarded only third best TimeformUS Speed Figure in the race
Upgrade: Kobe’s Back made a huge late run despite slow pace in first start off layoff
Downgrade: Wild Dude ran well below average for G2, benefitted from pace
Not only did Kobe's back have the best last race figure in the Commonwealth, he earned it under adverse circumstances. Nice win today paying $7.60.

Good segment. Though I felt the wind go out of Todd's sails when you weren't so greatly impressed with Carpe Diem's performance. Todd loves all things Keeneland, of course.
Teaching moments. Christina asked you two excellent questions about the figures last week while on air. Todd asked you, today, after learning your opinion on CD, "what kind of TFUS number does it take to win the Derby?" (paraphrased) .... Anyway, teaching moments are always a good thing. You did good work.

I agree with your probable winner, but if Dortmund misses the start and gets stuck in the middle he doesn't look as good to me. If he doesn't clear to the lead, but does get a decent position 3 or more wide in the turn, he should be ok.
AP just doesn't impress me, on numbers (velocities), so if he is going to go out early he'll have to show me better velocities than he has thus far, and if he does, that may not bode well for him later. Firing Line may be the best bet of the top contenders, as he will be outside early and out of the kickback possibly, which appears to me to be quite excessive, from watching the undercard so far. Bayern got a bad start in the 9th, was stuck in the middle of all that stuff, and did not like it a bit. Maybe he was just rusty and not in top form but that kickback looked really bad to me.
Weekly article, stuck to the Oaks in Derby this week with more detail than usual. I'll be on at some point today I think, probably just after noon.

As I posted earlier about your pre-race analysis, it pretty much aligned with mine. I had a feeling that, with so many early horses in the field, some of those early horses would not go out early, and doubted that a very fast pace would happen. Post-race I thought the pace was legitimate, not slow but not really fast, and that the main 4 or 5 contenders were much better than the rest. AP surprised me, Dortmund disappointed, and Firing Line ran just about how I thought he would.
So, in response to your question, I thought you did a great job pre-race!

Pretty surprised Craig is holding firm on his opinion of the California Chrome race.
1)Pace wasn't visually slow(field was spread out and nobody had any kind of strong hold on their horse)
2)The horses that were 1st & 3rd early with CC had nothing left in the stretch to even challenge for minor awards and finished off the board
3)If you use the same variant for the 7th & 8th races ALL horses in the CC race would have run slower than they usually do/were expected to.
In the past Craig and I have been on the same side of these controversial numbers and I am surprised with all of the common sense evidence pointing to the variants being different that his opinion hasn't wavered at all.

The finish wasn't visually impressive, even though I don't think Espinoza really asked Chrome to dig way deep in the stretch. The second place finisher looked to be finishing a little better, but Chrome looked to be finishing within himself. What does the final 1/4 look like? I can't think even that came up too fast, in and of itself.

Race 9 ran about like it should have so it's pretty obvious that the surface was not significantly different in that race versus race 7 or 9. CJ chose to not break out that race, and I agree with him. The horses/jockeys in race 8 just ran slow, on their own. You run slow on a normal surface, you get a slow speed figure. The "enhanced" speed figure would need to be adjusted for the slow pace but not the normal speed figure.

Race 9 was 6 furlongs so not even run on the part of the track that the slow opening quarter was recorded in race 8. To me that's apples and oranges. If there was a gust of headwind going in to the 1st turn of race 8 how under any circumstance is the 9th race going to prove the variant of a 2 turn race?
I realize most people think you can never be 100% certain on anything in horse racing and especially in these type of situations but I disagree(its taken me years and years to get to this point), and I am not being hyperbolic when I say that I am 100% sure that there is a big difference in the variants between the 2 races. I DO NOT know the reason but to me that is not really all that important.
I agree with the final number Beyer gave for both races. I used the EXACT same methodology for the 7th and 8th races, NO ARTIFICIAL ADJUSTMENT, and both races matched well within each race but the variants were a full second apart from each other. I should add that I do include pace AND ground loss in my methodology.
I saw the pace was slow, but that is in relation to final time. The pace was not necessarily slow for the horses mentioned that were first and third early. They just aren't very good as evinced by their odds of 38 and 39 to 1. They actually ran figures close to their last race when pace is considered.
Here is how the figures look for the San Pasqual with the variants I used (same as races 6 and 7) and it also shows the previous two figures for each horse.
Another perspective---the leader, Alfa Bird, ran a 92 1st 1/4 mile and a 112 for 6f. While that 112 is moderate in relation to the final time figure of 120, he had to work very hard to get from that 92 to a 112 while fighting with Chrome for the lead.
We don't give numerical ratings for individual race segments, only cumulative. But if we did , Alfa Bird's 1/4 to 3/4 rating would be 122. That is too much for him and no real surprise he packed it in.

I see that you shaded the pace in blue, which if I am correct this is only done in the most extreme of slow paced days/races.
And watching that race you can honestly say that it LOOKED like a "blue coded" pace to you? To the extent it would cause GRADED STAKES horses to run 3-9 points off of their previous race?
I just don't see that at all and to me by you giving the entire field lower final numbers but shading the pace blue you "broke out " the race in your own way.

That is my point though, the horses you mentioned are not graded stakes horses. Alfa Bird was badly beaten in a NW2 Allowance last out and Blingo badly beaten in a NW3 allowance. This was a grade 2. What is "slow" for California Chrome is not slow for them.
The blue shading is for extreme differences between the leader's pace figures and the winner's final time. That is it. It can be a little confusing when overmatched horses quit in these races. You may notice Alfa Bird was still given two extra points for "pace" in his overall rating. His final time figure of 107 was upped to 109. It wasn't a "slow" pace for him.

Ok, so let me get this straight, the "slow pace" wasn't a slow pace for Alpha Bird but he ran 5 points lower on your numbers than his last race because of the "slow pace"?
Huh?

Beyer added points to the race due to the "slow pace"
TimeformUS gave the horses lower numbers but shaded the pace blue for the "slow pace"
I broke out the race and used a different variant and believe the pace was only average to a little slow.
In the end I guess we all basically end at about the same number for the horses so no matter what happens moving forward everybody will be comfortable with what they chose.

I didn't give the horses "lower numbers"...that is what they ran in my opinion. I'm just saying the slow pace is a factor in why. It isn't like a 118 is chopped liver, it is a G3 type number for older males.

This is the part that can be confusing. It was a slow pace for California Chrome, the winner. The winner's final time figure is the baseline for our red/blue coding. That is about the best I can explain it.
I'll try one other way. Let's say a maiden claimer was in the race that is about a 60 type horse. He was in third a length off the opening quarter for a 90 pace figure. Wouldn't that be "fast" for him while still be slow for graded stakes horses? This is the same thing as Alfa Bird, only to the extreme.

By "gave the horses lower numbers" I meant you gave every horse in the race a lower number than you gave them in their last race(by 3-9 pts)

OK but that isn't unusual for a race with a slow pace. If I could run 100 meters in 12 seconds (I can't) but one day I jog the first 20, I could never run my best time. But I could still win a race if I was in against guys that can't crack 14.
In the end, given the last race was consistent with the other races and there was nothing weather related, I try to stick with using the same variant for all the races around the same number of turns. I'm not averse to doing it when I feel there is additional evidence, but when I doubt I don't break out.
I took a lot of grief for doing just that with California Chrome's Derby, but it turned out to be the right decision. I don't get them all right, but I have a pretty good record on the tough calls. The same happened with American Pharoah's "slow" Derby this year. I had it rated fast and stuck by it. He didn't let me down either.

And you and I discussed both of those races and agreed with each other. I was also 100% sure that we were on the right side then which is why I was pretty surprised this time. The reason I will say things with such certainty is because my methodology doesn't involve ANY opinion.
There wont be any proving right or wrong on this one because everybody will adjust either for the perceived slow pace or if it was already added in we all end up at about the same place.

I am somewhat mystified by the the morning line. when I looked at some of the speed ratings it looks like Songbird is not even among the top fastest three pariticpants, so i find it difficult to believe that she will be a short priced favorite or even the post time favorite. She will have to run the fastest race of her career to win this race. I think 6 of the paticipants are capable of winning this race. My picks for the race are Beholder, Stellar Wind and Chatterbox. I think its very likely that Beholder rates and that Chatterbox wll go for the lead. Then Songbird's jockey will have to decide whether to go head to head with an older mare and hope to have something left or let Chatterbox clear and rate behind her , which I think will happen. So I see Chatterbox getting clear . and them trying to run her down late. If the track is speed favoring , they may not catch her.

You are using speed ratings in regard to Songbird but totally ignore pace ratings when saying that Chatterbox will go for the lead...how will she get the lead? Her E1 pace figs (BRIS numbers) are routinely 12-15pts below Songbird, who has E1 figs that TOWER over this field.
She may get the lead if her jock quarterhorses her from the gate, otherwise it belongs to Songbird

Silly question, but is there a factor I can use to approximate what a time form rating would be to a Beyer figure...I know they are real different things but still just for fun what would a Timeform rating of 100 be in Beyerspeak?

In the turf sprint, Obviously garnered a 126, and Om garnered a 117 figure, yet the winning margin was a nose if I remember correctly... Is the large spread due to the fact that Om was a deep closer that race, and the figure is geared to pace horses...?
In the turf sprint, Obviously garnered a 126, and Om garnered a 117 figure, yet the winning margin was a nose if I remember correctly... Is the large spread due to the fact that Om was a deep closer that race, and the figure is geared to pace horses...?
It is because the pace was fast. There are times when closers get better figures than speed horses too, just depends on the set up.
Here is the chart which shows the pace and speed figures for the top three horses of the Turf Sprint. The overall figure is a mixture of the second call pace figure (half mile in this race)and the final time figure. The mix is the part that varies. Each horse's mixture is based on his figures, his early position, the distance, the surface, and the "race shape"...the race pace figure compared to the winning final time figure.
I'll be honest, don't think I've ever seen a spread as big as Om's before, and especially considering it was a sprint race. He was so far behind a pace that was a little faster than average that his overall number was docked 6 points. As a comparison, if he were a front running winner with those same pace and final time figures, he'd be docked at least 15 points.

One question, are these speed ratings, and pace ratings universal. If a horse earned a 117 speed rating at Remington Park, does that 117 count at Aqueduct?

Yes. I hope this isn't related to Unbridled Mo---she stunk today regardless of what her previous figure was. The Remington Oaks has been a very strong race for all the others that exited that contest.

More Spirit basically matched the effort of the Sexton Mile

It looks to me like it was a case of Baffert having better horses who ran their usual, to somewhat better races, and the rest of the fields just not running all that great.
Sharp Azteca with that pace really kinda folded rather easily based on his other races.

How about Abel Tasman, to overcome that slow pace is a pretty incredible effort, and on the inside where I still think was not that great.
and as I said before if Paid Up Subscriber could not beat Songbird with that setup she is never going, better look for better spots than to take more shots.

and as I said before if Paid Up Subscriber could not beat Songbird with that setup she is never going, better look for better spots than to take more shots.
I appreciate you saying this. I watch the replays when I write it as well, at least for those I hadn't seen and remember well.

Given the pace scenario Tale of Silence ran really well, ran back to that 118 on his form.

Note: Race completely fell apart late – all fractions red in TimeformUS PPs; well below TimeformUS Speed Figure Grade 1 par for 2-year-old fillies
Is there a list of class pars somewhere for handicapping use?

Publicly no, but I'll publish then soon for stakes races.

I got in yesterday and today no problem.
Hey guys, I know there have been some issues and the tech guys are on it. I had a death in the family yesterday so other than what I posted above, I'm out of the loop for a few days.

CJ - we all have a great passion for this game but family will always come first. My condolences and well wishes to you and your family. Catch you when you come back.
Thanks guys,
From what I understand, things are back and running smoothly.

sorry to hear about your loss
My brother Cary, between myself and Justin in age, lost his wife to kidney cancer. She was only 48. She was just diagnosed in June. Very tough loss for the family. They have been together since they were 15 years old. It has been one shitty year. I'm really looking forward to 2018.
Thanks for the kind words. PA is a good place to go and talk horses and forget about things for a short while. Just not Off Topics. :)

Wow CJ, I'm terribly sorry to hear this news. I know we all try to come up with the right words in a situation like this, but words do nothing but fail me when I read something like this.

Looking at the all the slow paces it makes me wonder if some of the Del Mar track profile had rubbed off a bit because I am not sure I have seen that many slow paces over one week at opening week at Santa Anita.

Did speed hold up on dirt..?

Did speed hold up on dirt..?
yes, going that slow it was almost impossible for it not to. There were races that fell apart, just not these ones with slow paces.

Was wondering, cause if speed held then what explains the slow paces, not a tiring surface...?
Too bad they don't publish a Geo-technical report describing the composition of the sand and clay mixtures and compaction reports, moisture contents, etc...too much to ask but I'm almost certain they have some lab testing going on...wouldn't they..?

You can kind of see my thoughts on how I use the figures and the thinking behind them. I'd like to think I've given some pretty solid notes for horses when they show up in future races as well.
Slow week but some good 3yo races:

Horse like him are so tricky...probably had more in the tank, but at short odds and against a horse that has run faster, I'll be there with you.
I had Mask running so slow, his quarter mile time is not even on my speed chart!
I was waiting to see what CJ had him at.
Looking forward to betting against him, too.
