Weekend Update: Dortmund wins the San Felipe with a 108, Carpe Diem takes the Tampa Bay Derby with a 105, and El Kabeir gets a 99 for his Gotham win.

Hmmm...

I am not familiar with the TFUS scale, but from what I can see El Kabeir's race seems significantly inferior compared to the other two... My figs are saying that they are close, so i will have to take a closer look and see if I can find a hole...

Honestly, I'd be worried if I had an inner dirt horse winning G3s with figs similar to the higher graded, more targeted preps unless he were winning by large margins. It would be pretty unusual for several inner dirt horses to be even with the rest of the crop. I think Far From Over is the best horse there as he beat El Kabeir pretty easily despite a bad start and running into just an average pace. He ran a 103 despite the start, so could project to as high as a 110 in my mind.

Here's more data on top figures (with chart) 2011-2015. This may help. ;)

Too, think closely about your question. In reviewing a product, most horse players cast a wider net with their handicapping encompassing daily play, weekend play, entire meets, etc. You're asking for the prediction of the winner of one race, one day of the year. Ultimately, the most difficult race in North America.

Too, for possibly quicker access, in the racing folder there is a permanent thread for the TFUS weekly TVG segments and the blog review. I included, as well, the link to the pace/speed figure charts.

interesting to see the numbers on Mubtaahij comparable to the big US horses... not many places have had speed figures on him... that burst was pretty impressive... plus lets keep in mind his race was run at 1 3/16... hmm

That reminds me - is there anywhere to get some more figures on Mubtaahij? I've done some looking and came up with nothing. Did find a DRF article that said the splits look slow but were above par for Meydan. Seems like there would be some more concrete information out there somewhere.

There is no run up at Meydan, thus the fractions do look slow compared to similar calls in North America.

The UK racing publication, The Racing Post, has their own ratings (RPR).
Here's a recent article that weighs up the UAE Derby comparisons.
By their calculations, this year's winner should be a contender.
Naturally, they are well aware of the poor record of the Dubai trial.

Seems the author has warmed a bit towards American Pharoah's chances.
He received a 121 RPR at Oaklawn, which heads the class, I believe.

Mubtaahij's RPR rating is pretty high.......I just like those horses coming from that far away & needing to get comfortable with their surroundings, etc...over here after that long trip, jet lag & whatever else those horses have to go thru, like quarantine, etc......

He's definitely going underneath in Exactas, tris & supers.......can't put him on top of any of my tickets.

It's probably a fair assessment that he's the strongest challenger
to ship here after winning the UAE Derby. Good enough to win?
Ehhhhh.........

whats a run up?

do we know anything about his jockey?

the one thing i can say about Mubtaahij is no other horse responded down teh stretch from 1 crack of the whip like him its was like hitting the nitrous button

i think aquiring as much information as we can on Mubtaahij is important piece of the puzzle for handicapping this derby

whats a run up?

I could talk about it for a long time, but the short story is that it is an untimed part of the races in North America. It is a "running start" before the official timing begins.
