I'm working on writing some pedigree stats now. I've found a list on a bris brochure that I'm implementing and I have the Dosage book by Steve Roman and will implement that, I have also ordered Exploring Pedigree by Mike Helm. Does anyone have any suggestions on books I should read and what works and doesn't work?

I had been using Exploring Pedigree years ago and IMHO his approach is very weak and outdated... Probably your best approach is to go ahead and create a mid-sized charts data base (~ 50K races is going to be sufficient) and apply your own research and data mining...

A couple of related books I have found interesting:

   http://www.amazon.com/Racehorse-Breeding-Theories-David-Dink-ebook/dp/B005G0F2B6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1425509561&sr=8-2&keywords=race+horse+breeding+theories

While I also found the following useless:

If you are willing to spend the cash, and it is pricey, I would suggest
http://www.tesiopower.com/
Bought the original version and used it commercially as breeding consultant. The program itself has so many features, working with pedigrees is a breeze. The DB is huge and allows for custom searches. The staff at Tesio is top notch and updates are a breeze. I attribute my success, very high ratio of starters/winners, in large to the programs ability to teach you what a quality pedigree should possess. Tons of historical info on ancestors.
It is definitely a professional level piece of software but I still have my TesioPower 2000 and it is very handy even now, very good investment. While I have to manually add new names, I can create a filter on my new data to do custom searches.
15 years old and still kicking.
For books, my favorite by far is
http://www.amazon.com/The-great-breeders-their-methods/dp/B0006YUKNC

Mr Hewitt's insight includes interviews with Tesio, EP Taylor, The Belmont's, the Aga Khan etc. If you really want to understand how the breed developed from the 1800's forward, this is your read.

P.S. If you can ever get to Keeneland, spend a couple of days in their library.
Their historical info is phenomenal.

Is this the correct URL? It doesn't seem to work.

Pedigree query is also very good:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/

The other thing I like about Pedigreequeery is the ability to get some other reports that are free. I find the progeny one useful as being able to see who else a certain horse has sired. If one is so inclined there's links there that go to the broodmare & broodmare sire.

For example this is the one on horses Secretariat sired.

A practical example of pedigree query usefulness could be found in Friday 03 06 15 at Hou in the 8th. First time at distance with veteran turf rider Nolan.
Could :9: Bucking Thunder get a distance? Special Rate and Lost Code says yes. http://www.pedigreequery.com/bucking+thunder

$69.00 winner wire to wire and alive in the double to the :2: :5: :7: :8:

Had a mare with very similar Spend a Buck\Lost Code breeding. The first time we stretched out one of her daughters on the grass (by a son of MR P out of Crepello mare) she ran a barely beaten 3rd at 75-1. Sometimes going back 2 gens can reveal things not seen on a form.
Thinking about the Spend a Buck\ Lost Code idea, have anyone looked into using Werks or other nicking reports, or is that voodoo type stuff to most handicappers?
P.S. Paul Nolan is one of the most underated grass riders in the country, IMHO. Knew him from Prairie Meadows and Canterbury and he rode first call when we shipped to Minn. Has a great grass clock in his head.

I just found out that Bris will NOT be publishing Sire Stats 2015 in book form. The lady I talked to said many were upset. I told her I wasn't angry. I wasn't surprised either.

I asked if too few books were sold now. She told me they sold so many they had to do a second printing of the 2014 edition.

They will sell it if you download it and print it yourself!?!?

Un fortunately my quill is broken and my ink well is dried up.

So thanks for other alternatives.

I wonder how this game can survive with so many roadblocks from the entities in and around the industry.

I know many here are pissed at CD and Twin Spires. This may be my reason for leaving them.

Or, rather, "never leave for Saratoga without him".

This man's stat books are gold! ;)
