I love Turfway... from the comfort of my home. I'll take your word on the upkeep.

What a closers' bias today. Probably as big as any I've ever seen.

TimeformUS had the last four winners rated 1-1-1-2 on late pace. I wait for days like this at Turfway. Seems the colder and drier the better it is for closers.

I think the last time I was there was 2008 or 2009, and it was in pretty rough shape at that time. I can only imagine what you saw today.

The place is a nightmare. they don't even bother slapping on new paint anymore. I grew up going to Latonia, used to sit in a box in the clubhouse , good food, warm spot on a cold winter night. Now I am not sure they even turn on the heat any more.
If it weren't for the horsemen needing to make a living there isn't a need for Turfway any more as far as the betting aspect goes.
My apologies to those of you who love the place and do well there. It has just fallen so far and the one time dream of it housing a casino seems to be dead.

What's seen on tv and simulcast, such as the paddock and winners circle are very well kept (I suppose because it's visible to the world that way)

You can see it driving up to it, the exterior is scary.

The top floor is closed.

There are corners of the plant that give it the feeling of being abandoned, like no one has been there for a decade. I was very surprised.

However, good crowd on a dreadful day, high 30s and light rain throughout.

kentucky doesn't even have a circuit anymore. Most of the horses at turfway come from Ohio, WV, the bottom level KY claimers.

I flew into N.ky/Cincinnati airport and track was basically next door so I had to go, especially considering I'd get there before first post.

But it was depressing to see how the sport has fallen. I hate seeing it but I suppose it's a good dose of reality.

You can see the massive hulking structure from the interstate. Not sure what the solution is cuz its simply waaaaaay to big. Only time I've been there is for the spiral and it still had the haunted house abandoned feel to it. Its sad cuz keeneland is like an hour away and is on another planet when it cones to attendance and quality

That's what happens when you run a meet two months of the year. Aren't most tracks nowadays run down? Look at Churchill and NYRA tracks.

so turfway is rundown cuz they run more then keeneland? The attendance in the 2 months at keeneland is probably numerous fold over what turfway does..you would think keeneland would be the one in disrepair with the pressure to the facility over the 30 days meets. The reality is the place is immaculate day 1 and day 30 while turfway is a dump day 1 and day 120. No effort is made...you only get what you put in.

I actually made my first visit to Turfway yesterday. The grandstand was certainly warm enough and the staff was attentive and courteous. Yes, the grandstand is too large for the average race day, but that's the case all over the country. Overall, I found the experience quite pleasing.

Agree with comments about the staff and hospitality. I know without slots, Turfway will come to an end, sadly. However, the Kentucky Downs rejuvenation is quite remarkable with the casino at full capacity. Let's see if Kentucky can get its act together and save a true blue-collar racetrack that can still be transformed back into it's former "retro" glory......I'm pulling for Turfway Park.

I know it was only a month long but losing their fall meet has really done Turfway in. The fall meet usually had decent weather and very large crowds on fir and sat nights as they played well to the party crowd with live music and cheap beer.

It was also great because bigger trainers sent horses there as a prep for Keeneland. Turfway actually had some nice msw races and the fall championship used to get some Very nice horses.

I live 5 miles away and rarely go now which is sad but it is what it is.

I don't think Turfway is coming to an end anytime soon, even without slots. The field sizes are definitely above average. They handled over $1.7 million on Sunday. Seems to me that the requisite demand is still there.

I think the keeneland surface change helps them...pretty much the only sythetic surface around once with Arlington and pid closed for the season...if your a synth specialist on the eastern half of the country its turfway or nothing

I stand corrected:

Good for Turfway, now please use some extra funds to spruce up the place!

Even though I did not have pleasant experiences there in the past, I too am pulling for them. Do not like to see a track close its doors.

Turfway is in a nice area. Anyone ever try that 24 hour steak place nearby? Forget what it's called...

As for the racetrack, I thought it looked okay for a small racetrack. Peaceful.

The majority owners of Turfway are Caesers Entertainment and Rock Gaming, which has a casino in Downtown Cincinnati. http://www.turfway.com/corporate

It is my opinion when the Instant Racing lawsuit from the Family Foundation is settled, Turfway will put in the machines, which will then help to raise purses (as it has at Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park) and keep the track going for years to come.

Turfway still gets thousands of fans, including many families, on Spiral Stakes day and gets pretty good crowds on Friday nights for bands and other events that take place during the races.

In other words, don't count Turfway out by any means.

How does the instant racing work? What information do they give you about the horses in the race?

I could try but will make a mess of it. Here's a quick summary:

Instant racing is a bad idea.

When you're using something else to essentially band-aid a product, the broken product isn't actually being fixed! If anything, instant racing machines will just teach people that playing something requiring no long analysis is better than spending hours reading past performances.

I was hoping they would provide more of the past performances to work with.
