Thanks, Tom and A. Pineda.
John is doing fine, working full time at Santa Anita...they had a special presentation for him today in the winners circle after the 4th race today.
John has a Facebook Page......he'll put a picture up when he gets home.

I would see John almost everyday in the press box at Hollywood Park. Always came away thinking How can I be a better person. Like John. Happy Birthday.

Thank you Vic....we sure miss you.
My favorite race call of all time was your last call at Hollywood Park....it was a turf race (which is what we bet), a cheap one and I sat up for hours going over that race, looking at it from every possible angle....finally came up with two horses I couldn't separate....I boxed an exacta......and couldn't believe it when I heard you call them one two at the finish.

John Shear, the paddock captain who turns 97 on Wednesday, will be honored in the winner’s circle. He first came out to Santa Anita in 1955. He was raised in an orphanage in England, went to work at 14, served in World War II and loves horses and people. He’s been part of the Santa Anita environment for decade upon decade

In 2011, when he was 90, he received national attention. A horse got loose in the paddock, and Shear tossed a 6-year-old girl out of the way. He got trampled, resulting in pelvic fractures, a fractured cheekbone and gashes above his eye and down his arm. Here’s the wonderful Bill Plaschke story from 2011.

Happy birthday, John. Someday a movie will be made about your life. It will be amazing, some won't believe the true life you've lived.

SoCalFan taught me about everything I know about physicality handicapping.... But not everything SHE knows about it.... She's a one of a kind, herself. Great family.
