Cox, my internet service provider sent an email out saying : You now have

5X the cloud storage.

Well yippee, I guess... I don't have a clue what this is or how to use it. Should I be real happy with 5 times something I don't what it is?

For those here that use cloud storage.... what would the average person do with it and how is it used for those that may not be average folks..

I'm not a Cox customer. If Cox is like TWC, there could be regional differences, so, take the following with a grain of salt -- perhaps call your local service rep to confirm the information found on the links.

First: http://www.cox.com/myconnection/learn/whats-so-hot/online-backup.cox?campcode=mcpl_ln_wsh-cloud-drive_tease_learn_111114

Next: http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=778df9b0-9b5a-11e0-7828-000000000000

Then, following some links on the page from the 2nd link: http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=54b46be0-9b64-11e0-7828-000000000000

Finally, just remember, the cloud is a fancy way of saying 'some one else's computer.' And be careful what you put into Cox's cloud storage, for example, I wouldn't put any financial data there.

P.S.: If you're using any iOS devices, see: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cox-cloud-drive/id596530775?mt=8

Thanks much. It appears that I'm better off not using it. Just me personally, I'm sure they have people that are very happy.

They toss in some free storage with your account. They decided to multiply it by 5

Whoopee! If you use it........

I used to keep my financial records in the Cloud....now they are in the wind!

Seriously, I am happy with Box.com.

I don't understand this "cloud" concept at all.......why would anybody use this?

Why not spend an extra $100 and buy more hard drive space?

And the above is right.......I would never keep personal information in a place where someone can hack into it......like they did with the nude photos of those "celebrities".

The preferred method of saving backup data is in two locations with the second being distant (i. e., you save two copies at your home and it burns downs).

These days with the prominence of mobile devices folks are storing more data online (Cloud) to offer remote access any time to coordinate all their devices.

This is just me but I cannot trust anyone........if you have a need to store data online ..........buy a usb stick.........they come in with 128 GB of storage and you can take it anywhere (like your pocket or your safety deposit box).

I agree about the trusting of the cloud with sensitive info...no, no..

For extra storage I have been using several 65gb Micro-SD cards for a cheap way to backup....for about $20 it is as about cheap as can be....Plus, you can take pictures too...

The cloud save me when I got a virus that encrypted all my files on this computer. I was using some free Drop Box space to store them in case my hard drive failed. I was amazed how easy it was to retrieve them. I think is crazy not to back them up these days with Decrypt Virus lowlifes floating around. I now back everything up in two places since I can do it for free. It is very easy to set it up to automatically upload your files.

Ever heard of a work group? The cloud makes it easy for a group of people to use the same files. Even at the same time. It also makes the data available "anytime" in your scenario you would have to tote that extra hard drive, usb stick around. You could never take a phone call asking you about a document or the data from a document unless you had it with you.

Other scenarios apply. Dead batteries on your primary device, hard drive failure, usb sticks can be wiped by accident. Don't forget how big some databases are. You can't carry a huge database around that needs constant updating etc. The cloud makes life very comfortable for millions of business people every day. Hell, I'm self employed with very little data and I put stuff in the cloud all the time. If it's important, I can get it on a whim at any moment. From anywhere with a cell tower. Even if it's only a Jcapper report or an Equisim report that I copied to the cloud before I left the house and headed to the track.

JustRalph I agree with what you said.........."Work Group" but note I said "personal information" and that includes things like financial information i.e. bank accounts, passwords, phones numbers, photos...........!!

For students and other office workers who have to share information and use the same data base I can see the concept.....but not the personal stuff.

Would this be at all similar to Email storage? I had a very vey old yahoo account that I had not used in years. A few weeks go I logged into it and all the emails were still there. Plus a couple thousand spam emails. If I'm understanding this (cloud business) correctly, those email were stored on another computer somewhere owned by yahoo?
