Maybe John Galt is serving dinner for Dickens's Tiny Tim this year?

Great thread HCAP. But you need to preach to your own greedy brethren. As chronicled by Nic Kristof from the NY Times, liberals are greedy and less supportive of charities than conservatives.

Actually, both side are very supportive. It's just that liberals prefer to use OPM.

(OPM = other peoples money)

So you claim. But you seem to be much more knowledgeable about, and obsessed with, her than the vast majority of conservatives. I suspect a secret crush. :D

Amazing! Rand is a symbol of conservatism, central to it's core, and is being denied as such here as her inane philosophy is on display. So much disavowing
"As always, should you or any of your I.M. Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions."

You'd think driving a cab would be a nice business opportunity for the "Little Guy."

But someone in Government thought he knew better than the market how many cabs should be on the road. So, they created the Medallion system which froze the number of cab licenses.

This artificial limit on supply caused the prices of these Medallions to skyrocket. So, if you want to start a Yellow Cab business in NYC, it will cost you over 1 million dollars.

The only ones who can afford Medallions are the big taxi companies that own hundreds of cabs, and the Little Guys (except for Andy) have to work for the big companies on their terms.

It is not surprising that a company like Uber has been so successful as it has exposed the gross inefficiency of the overly-regulated taxi industry.

It is also not surprising that Uber has had trouble with governments which don't like being exposed.

All I am doing is quoiting conservative icon/hero Annie at Christmas time.
Go stands on the John Galt railroad tracks and ponder that as that idiotic train mows you down.

I agree with Rand on many points, but disagree (strongly) on charitable giving. What's the big deal? What is your point? I have to agree with someone on every issue? You aren't that mindless, are you?

For complicated subjects, context is important. Sound bites don't properly convey the idea.

1- Yes, of course. A national holiday, in this country, cannot have an exclusively religious meaning. The secular meaning of the Christmas holiday is wider than the tenets of any particular religion: it is good will toward men—a frame of mind which is not the exclusive property (though it is supposed to be part, but is a largely unobserved part) of the Christian religion.

The charming aspect of Christmas is the fact that it expresses good will in a cheerful, happy, benevolent, non-sacrificial way. One says: “Merry Christmas”—not “Weep and Repent.” And the good will is expressed in a material, earthly form—by giving presents to one’s friends, or by sending them cards in token of remembrance . . . .

The best aspect of Christmas is the aspect usually decried by the mystics: the fact that Christmas has been [i]commercialized. The gift-buying . . . stimulates an enormous outpouring of ingenuity in the creation of products devoted to a single purpose: to give men pleasure. And the street decorations put up by department stores and other institutions—the Christmas trees, the winking lights, the glittering colors—provide the city with a spectacular display, which only “commercial greed” could afford to give us. One would have to be terribly depressed to resist the wonderful gaiety of that spectacle.
The Objectivist Calendar, Dec. 1976

2 - "Or did you say it's the LOVE of money that's the root of all evil? To love a thing is to know and love its nature. To love money is to know and love the fact that money is the creation of the best power within you, and your passkey to trade your effort for the effort of the best among men. It's the person who would sell his soul for a nickel, who is the loudest in proclaiming his hatred of money—and he has good reason to hate it. The lovers of money are willing to work for it. They know they are able to deserve it."
...
"If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose—because it contains all the others—the fact that they were the people who created the phrase 'to MAKE money.' No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity—to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted, or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words 'to make money' hold the essence of human morality. "
Atlas Shrugged

So to you, Hcap, a Very Rationally Self-Intetested Christmas and a Morally Purposeful New Year.
