I remember there was some discussion of this odd-ball distance last year. Did the jury reach a verdict? Is it a turf sprint...or is it more accurately approached as a short turf route?

It's 2 turns and depending on run up can be very close to a mile, so I've always thought it is route.

Personally, I would treat it as a route, because it is around 2 turns. A big issue under discussion here was the run up, which can vary greatly at GP. There were examples of the actual distance of a 7.5f race being over a mile with the run up.

I started to ask "If they're running around two turns anyway, why don't they just run a few extra yards and make it an even mile?" But then I remembered that those cheapskates at Gulfstream are only paying a measly $36,000 purse for an N2X allowance, so why should the horses be expected to run a full distance?

Run a full distance? What difference does it make?

The most important thing about this distance is the short run to the first turn. Horses breaking from outer posts get hung out wide into the first turn.

7 1/2 is the full distance.

Edit: replying to cholly. Whatever they write the race for is the full distance.
