Anyone who wants to reverse the seemingly terminal decline in US (and CAN) horse racing needs to read that wonderfully written article.
The Japanese have taken horse racing to a whole other level. They are doing something right.

Is all about culture, I think the move of the HP meet to Dmr and the big jump in attendance numbers prove that

Edit- I'll include the link to the video of the Jpn fans who stayed up in the middle of the night to watch Orfevre in the 2012 Arc (plus there were many Jpn fans on track that day). You just simply don't have that level of interest here.

I love that video, but it was painful to watch again because I had a good bet on Orfevere. He banged into the rail late during the stretch drive.

I know almost nothing about Japan racing; the very few things I know about it, come from some reading I had done several years ago, when a Better Than Honour colt, named Casino Drive ran in Belmont winning the Peter Pan.

From what I recall, in contrary to what is happening in the States, there are also restrictions in the number of horses a trainer can have in his barn, a regulation that I find to be extremely good to keep the game competitive...

Wow!!

These videos should be viewed by any racing official (LOL), trying to promote the game as some form of entertainment for retires and older people who try to find a way to pass their time!

The thousands who camped outside the gates overnight didn't do so to get the best spot to set up their coolers, but to save a spot near the finish line or walking ring.

How true this sentence appears to be!

Horse racing is ALL ABOUT GAMBLING and should be promoted as such, competing head to head against casino games, poker and sports..

Emaciated Graded stakes winning horses have been pulled off of trailers bound for the slaughter house in the US.
So, people in glass houses and all that.

Ferdinand was a while back. The Japanese were, and still are, pretty embarrassed about the whole affair.

I don't know anything about this but, it may not be a bad idea to implement a variation of that policy here in the U.S.

What are the restrictions?

Yes, I think I am.. Unfortunately the people who are responsible for the fate of the game, do not appear to share the same scope of view though! They try to promote the game, like some form of an entertainment, that also involves some betting, like if anyone would ever had an interest about the 'sport' if it was not a gambling event.. For horse racing to restate its status as the KING of all kinds of gambling, it should follow a similar path to the poker industry, emphasizing the possibilities of hitting a huge score and the the ability to consistently show grinding profits... Instead, we are experiencing a disorganized sport, which is driven by myopic officials, who can not see past the end of their current meeting and all the try to do to improve the game, is to come up with a new ridiculous kind of exotic bet every year...
