Home and retired from stud duty in Japan,
Silver Charm has taken up residence at Old Friends.
He still looks a picture, too.

SC kind of started it all for me, and will forever have a special place in my heart. I didn't even know what a PP was at the time, and read the insert in the newspaper a hundred times before going to bed the night before the Derby. SC's name appeared to me in a dream, and I was certain he was going to be the winner. Headed to the Q track in my hometown ready to fire (which was probably about $25 bucks back then), and a few extra bucks my Mom had given me because she was always ready to back anything I did- including a horse. :) Got him to win, and some friends and I cashed an exacta. Was as big a thrill as I've had (correctly) betting a horse, I suppose because it was the first.

Glad he's home, and I hope someday I get to meet the horse who gave me so much joy, and made me look like a genius to my friends and family (if only for a day!).

Nice, one of my favorite horses, very game.

I remember when I was a young guy at Philly Park watching the big simulcast races, and there was a discussion about whether Silver Charm really came back at horses when he could see his rivals challenging him. Some experts said Silver Charm liked to look his foes in the eye and that he rose to the challenge when another horse came to him and accelerated back at them. Some of the old-timers there said it was BS, but it sure looked like Charm TRIED to come back at whoever challenged him, and I always thought that was cool. He was my second "favorite" horse, after Holy Bull (who of course retired two years earlier), and I rooted for him even if I didn't bet on the race. Hope he enjoys the rest of his life at the farm.

There's no way one of those old timers is Barry Irwin. :D

I agree with you that SC was one of those horses who refused to lose, he would fight back tooth and nail. Its great to have him back in the US for sure.

Thank God. I was thinking about him a few months ago. Visions of Ferdinand. I don't think that'll happen again, too much of an uproar over it, but never say never.

Silver Charm & Skip Away were the ones that hooked me into following racing.

Gamest horse I ever saw.
His win in the Dubai World Cup was the most determined effort I've ever seen.
Seemed like half of that field took turns running at him down that long stretch at Nad Al Sheba, and he turned them all away.

Glad he's home

He engaged Behrens into the lane and subdued him.
Then had to hold off three very very good runners in Malek, Loup Sauvage and the great Swain.
Still amazed he held them all at bay.

He looks likes he's been well taken care of, almost like he's ready to saddle up and get back out there.

It's a touching story. Bravo to the people who made this happen.

Thanks for picking this one up H4C.
That's a great look @ SC.
He does look good indeed.
Next to Affirmed.......he was toughest one to get by.
The ultimate respect for SC......Frank Dettori in the Classic @ CD.
I'm one of the few who don't blame him for the ride on Swain.
He wanted nothing to do with getting in SC crosshairs.
And yes Nijinski he did look alert, taking it all in and then some.
Did you ever notice how all of the great ones are always observing everything around them....
And I would certainly hope trainer Baffert finds time to pay him a visit.

Silver Charm's final career race was 6/12/99 after returning from Dubai
with a 4th place finish in the Stephen Foster Handicap .

He was ridden that day by Chris Antley , gone 14 years today .

A saw a photo of Little Silver Charm with a sign that said "Just remember, I was here first". I thought that was hysterical. Whoever does the tweets and Facebook commentary for Little Silver Charm is very funny.

In the San Vicente of his Derby year where he broke through the gate but won easily, I knew I had my Derby horse.

Part of an email that was forwarded to me from the Spawr barn. One of her friends has a farm in Versailles & was there Tuesday-

Silver Charm looks fabulous.... super condition and legs so clean it's hard to believe... he's about to turn 21 years old....the Japanese folks took really good care of him!

Trainers' dinner taking place tonight in Louisville.

By all accounts, Bob Baffert got pretty choked up
during his speech when he recounted his visit
to Old Friends today to visit Silver Charm.
