Hello

My Daughter has Open Office on her computer. She has saved some of her school papers onto a USB store and go. When the thumb drive is put on another computer that has Microsoft word, Microsoft Word shows an error and can not read it. Is there a solution to the problem? Thanks.

I believe you can open a Microsoft doc with Open Office but not the other way around.
Try RIGHT CLICKING and selecting OPEN WITH...it may let you choose which program to open it with.

I am a computer no-nothing so get a 2nd opinion

There is a program available called Libre-Office, an open source business and productivity suite that might work for your daughter, and others here on PA. :)

The important things about the Libre-Office suite is that it is free, Windows compatible, and designed to emulate Microsoft Office.

These facts especially help those that work at home but are burdened with smaller hard-drives and memory, operating systems and/or basically having an older computer.

When using the program for home use, Libre-Office is a small fraction of the size of the bloated and expensive commercial products out there like Microsoft Office. This helps the user of an older machine with an older operating system such as Win XP or Vista.

Speaking personally, I also never cared for Open Office.

I hope the link below will work.

Good luck.

LibreOffice is so similar to OpenOffice that you’d be unlikely to notice the difference using either one.

Libre-Office ...

Libre is a fork of OpenOffice (which is now Apache OpenOffice and is "open" again after it was "closed" -- that's another story)...anyway they are nearly the same, but Libre might be the better choice going forward...

Yes, I was a little too quick in denouncing Open Office. I shouldn't have simply because it's been many years since I used it.

Of the many great things I am learning about Linux is the constant and continuous improvement and tweaking of the programs.

This is the essence --in my very humble opinion-- of what open sourced and 'free' means -- it is a matter of choice and freedom as much as it does economic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DAlQ7MuFZ0 The winner. I did not find this "save as" trick until I started playing around with "R". Now save everything as a "csv file" which "R" reads easily all the time.

Student editions of MS Office are also pretty cheap, and might cause less headaches if she is expected to work with these things, just to have what everyone else has. (Assuming she is not a computer major.)
