View Full Version : Home teams getting overrun by opposing fans.

This didnt happen decades ago. In the 1970s and 80s you didnt go to Cowboys home games and see thousands of road jerseys. Watching the Dolphins=Packers game, lots of green in the stands. Same holds true for other sports.

Times have changed. I have to admit i would be less likely to go to a "home game" and have to deal with that, i would just stay away.

What is there to deal with exactly?

Its less of a "good experience" if you have people sitting all around you screaming for the other team. Not as "Fun". Its more fun if you are amongst 99% of home fans. I've been to both kinds of games, its a lot better entertainment experience if the crowd is all in for the home team.

It's part of the show, and the league likes it. While it has always been something that has happened when a popular team plays a local small-market rival, it gained recent media attention when Cowboys hosted the Texans in the battle of Texas.

Part of the reason it was mentioned was actually as a promotion and a media story covering the promotion in spite of the fact that the story was framed in a way that treated it as spontaneous and controversial.

Jerry Jones or whoever manages the media and ticket sales for the Cowboys would like to sell tickets, and absolutely LOVE the idea of a Texas game when Texans fans can come to their venue and increase the ticket revenue sales (as well as to a lesser extent the potential growth/reaching a larger base).

They sold 91,159 Tickets for the Cowboys Texans game. Their Cowboys AT&T Stadium can seat around 105K seats when fully offered.

Season tickets are expensive, and some folks sell off a few of them to cut back on the cost.
With StubHub its very easy.

That's what's going on. When you put your tickets on there or on the exchange..........the people that need the tickets are usually for the opposing team. If you sell a few games, the tickets you keep end up being close to free or way less than the price...the hometown people usually have tickets, fans for the other team that live in the area are looking for the "open" tickets and they will pay the premium. I've been noticing this for a while, plus we usually sell some of ours and make out kind of good on the deal.

I sell a few Thunder games each year to pay for a good portion of the tickets. After seven years, another regular season game is no biggie to me no matter who the opponent is. I'm still baffled people pay big bucks to see the Lakers when they really stink, but they do. I'll probably sell Cleveland, Lakers, one Clippers, maybe one Spurs, and the Celtics. That will pay 50% of the cost of the tickets for the season at least.

I'm just the opposite. While I'm not into professional sports I love mixing it up with college fans. Attending a Rivalry like Michigan/Ohio St. or OU/Texas is great fun. Don't see why it wouldn't translate to the NFL.

I agree.

My family has what is turning into a tradition. At least once a season we'll take in a Padres v. Giants game. Half of us root for the home team while the rest are Giant fans. And, half of the fun is the good nature fun we have, not just with all of the members of the family but with the other fans -- for both teams -- in the seats around our group.

Baseball is different. Etiquette requires rooting for the home team. ;)

Having been a military guy and lived all over, I'm used to going to other arenas/stadiums and rooting for the visitor. But, I do it quietly and never act like an ass. I just enjoy the games win or lose. Only fans I've ever had a problem with was Eagles fans, guy kept pounding my back every time the Eagles scored while killing the Giants on a Monday night. I wasn't even wearing Giants stuff, just wasn't in green.

I finally turned to him and said if he touched me one more time I'd knock his !~@#$ teeth out. He asked if I was going to fight the whole section, to which I told him I'm sure I'd get my tail kicked, but I'd make sure he got what was coming to him first. We were fine after that. I think the Giants lost like 30-7 with Jim McMahon leading the Eagles.

No doubt, I've seen people miss 85% of the game messing with phones, but of course they always want a picture taken to show they were there.

I visited Seattle for first time last month.
Went to Mariners game last Friday of the season.
It was fan appreciation night and the Mariners were still alive in
the playoff hunt.
There were more fans wearing Seahawks jerseys than Mariner jerseys.
Only 27,000 attended yet went to U of Washington football game and they had full house against Georiga State.
I blame the local media for this.
The newspaper and local TV stations do not cover baseball like they do football.
Forget hockey and basketball it is non issue in Seattle.
Didn't see any Emerald Downs t shirts either.

Just surprised as I grew up in NYC where the 4 major sports were covered.

Last two NFL games I attended the crowds were pretty wasted, and a lot of fights. Most of the fights involving people wearing visiting jerseys. Way too old for that now. High def and the red zone is just fine ty.

Don't you just love those kind of "fans"?
Geesh.......

I went to a Cal/Oregon game 4 years back as a neutral observer.
Friends locally, some with kids at school there, had some spare
tickets, so the wife and I went along and had a great time.

Oregon was #1 in the nation at the time.
The Ducks fans probably outnumbered the Cal faithful in Berkeley.
It felt kind of strange to have all that green and yellow around,
but the game was very close and exciting.

Cal was close to a 3 touchdown underdog, but nearly pulled
out the win, going down to a late Oregon field goal.

Now my daughter is at school there.
She hates football......

There would be a lot less "incidents" if teams just banned road jerseys.

If I was a Rams fan, I'd be embarrassed at the amount of 49'er red in their dome.

As a Steeler fan, there's no way in hell I'd go to Cincy for a game because of the actions MutuelClerk described above. Too old for that shit, and it'd be nothing but trouble for me.. :D

i was there once in my #11 jeff george jersey for a 1990 classic and the fans were actually pretty nice to me. of course we aren't a division rival like the giants.

jg rode the bench but jack trudeau led the good guys to a shocking win (+13) on the game's final play!! :jump:

Baseball is getting a dose of what racing has been going through. The games are too long and slow. The games are not great TV. There are not many stars or HR hitters.....or many good hitters at all with the drugs weeded out. Attendance and ratings have nosed dived....it took me 20 minutes to find a game last week because it was on one of the "auxiliary" sports channels.....and we are talking playoffs. Baseball may be hurting in the future if things don't change. Which is a shame.

Football may take a small dip too soon.......too many penalties and people are bitching about that too. I know several people that already gave up watching it. Every freakin play you have to look around for a flag and sometimes it is 5 to 10 seconds late....calling back TD's.....ticky tack and then other blatant non calls. I think they took consistency lessons from the stewards. I have to agree, its getting bad. Defensive holding is a "catch all" for whatever. Plus, you can tell the announcers were told to play along by most of their comments but if you listen to sports radio, many ex players are saying the same thing I did.

This is not new for baseball fans. A Yankee fan stuck in Nebraska, I made a lot trips to KC to see the Yankees over the years. There was always a lot more Yankee fans there than Royals or "A"s fans. Yes, I go back to the "half pennant porch" days.

I'll be at Joe Louis Arena Saturday night wearing Toronto Maple Leaf blue and white. Should be fun. Both teams kind of average, early in the season. So less passion, anger ( but just as much alcohol). I don't drink much anymore, one beer is it( especially at those prices). Going with my brother who is a Wings fan. We always have a good time.

Two of the Original Six, and old-time rivals to boot..sounds like a good time.

With StubHub its very easy.

All tickets are expensive. So, the hardcore fans of opposing teams are more willing to pay than the casual fans of the home teams.

yeah the Mariners have lost so much of their following the last few years cause they've been terrible. We had season tickets from 1992 to 2005 and from 1995 to 2001 when they were good it was the biggest thing in town. But with the Hawks winning the Super Bowl, they became far and away the biggest show in town.

While I've attended a lot of games as a "visiting" fan, I will say it just isn't the same as supporting your team at home. For one, I don't go to antagonize other fans so I stay quiet for the most part. For two, there is just something about celebrating a big win with your team's fans.

At Thunder games, we get a few Lakers/Lebron/Spurs/Mavs fans that act like jerks, but not too many, and they mostly get ignored. If they cross the line, they get tossed. I like it that way.

No doubt that celebrating a huge win with 99.9% home fans is a much better entertainment experience....can create for some memorable times.

I'm just like you, if i'm rooting for a road team i'm quiet, i don't wear "colors" and i don't make a scene, i respect the home fans and respect that they don't want someone there rooting against them in their barn. I don't know what people get out of wearing road jerseys and getting in the faces of the home fans and starting fights and arguments, but, i guess that's how the sports leagues want it, they want altercations because there has been nothing really done to stop them.

The guy who got seriously injured at the Dodger game was wearing Giants gear, i don't know if that was any factor with him getting "jumped" but it might have been. I think wearing colors to a "hostile" environment is just inviting trouble, nothing good can ever come from it.
