So far 2014 has been a superb year for Pioneerof the Nile. Here's a look to see what makes him such a promising sire.

The reason some people are surprised by his success is that he did his running during the period that synthetics were just launched. That was before the maintenance crews started figuring them out. They featured a lot of very slow paces, narrow winning margins, and very low speed figures. Plus, Beyer had yet to figure them out. He didn't start making some adjustments until later. A lot of talented horses were coming off those surfaces and jumping up sharply when they switched to dirt. They were all somewhat underrated (including Zenyatta's 4yo year when she was probably at her best) .

His overall record was good. He ran a fine race in the Derby to be 2nd (albeit in a less than stellar edition) on a very sloppy track despite racing outside on a day that was probably tilted a little towards the rail. He obviously went bad in the Preakness and never had a chance to demonstrate what he could really do.

He excelled on synthetics but look at all the talented dirt runners he's putting out.
