Ok guys I am totally confused by the jug races. Who races when?

Jugette fillies is under way right now

Tomorrow the colts race in 2 divisions, ... races 14 and 15
top 4 finishers in both R14 and R15 come back again to race in Race 18
if these 3 races produce 3 different winners then a third heat is run, Race 20

The reason they have 3 races called 'matineés'... then 20 races called 'evenings' is the old computer they use can't count higher than 20. :D

Inside post position and Leavers have a huge advantage at Delaware, 7 hole is almost impossible unless the horse has above average gate speed.
Scioto Downs drivers have done well, and David Miller (Ohio Boy grew up on 1/2 mile tracks,Fairs) by far has won more races then anyone at Delaware.

The track has been modified and addressed in a different manner than in past years. When the first set of races was racing, we noticed on the big screen at the sports book that the tires of the bikes had most of the rubber beneath the track surface as they were waiting start after the post parade. Translation is that the track crew put extra material making the cushion deeper and hence those that tried for the front end had a hard time keeping their stamina to the end. Of the 23 races today, only five won wire to wire.

On Sunday, I think that looking at the pp's I could not see much early speed entered and did not know what would happen. What did happen is 10 of the 19 races won wire to wire. Something happened on Monday (my guess is the added cushion) as only 4 races went wire to wire on Tuesday.

I am a firm believer in track bias and this is not your usual Jug/Jugette oval. The tv announcers (Wendy Ross, Sam McKee, et al was saying that with all the nice prices today and horse coming from behind that this racing is no longer boring with speed favoring horses paying low prices. They also said they are tired of hearing that about this track. To me, they knew the track was set up for closers.

As I am a loud mouth when I see something that should not be, I made enough comments on twitter that someone will get back the Coone crew and hopefully they take about three inches off the track scraping it to the side. The key tomorrow is to watch the early races looking at their wheels when they are waiting before the race starts as they usually had closeups and if you can see rubber meeting the track surface, they removed some cushion. If not, the front end will be not the place to be again and He's Watching wins for fun (given his closing style of racing) and both Lyonssomewhere and McWicked on the front end might not be able to win.

I really hope the speed favoring oval returns tomorrow but given the last two days, I am afraid of making a bet and changed plans as I will be at home instead of going to the sports book as previously planned.

The second thing that I found irritating today was the Jug video feed being void of any ex probables. Ever since they started broadcasting this event (using the MRN crew) those exacta probables were always running beside the odds. Not so today, all we got was win odds for 23 races. I knew that at least at home, I would have access to the exacta prices and I could see where the money was being spent in those exotic wagers. Hopefully they will address that problem for tomorrow but don't hold your breath.

If the track surface is set up in the same manner as the last two days, I am in total agreement with you as it is set up perfectly for He's Watching and his closing style of racing.

There are two another horses that will benefit greatly if the track is groomed the same today but may be at a short price. Diamondkeeper (# 7) in the 10th and Datysuk (# 3) in the 11th. Both have been on my radar screen all year and the track will be playing to their strengths.

The rest of the card will be a crap shot unless the speed favoring oval returns with a lot less cushion than the last two days.

Just listened to the LBJ announcers Sam Mckee et al and they mentioned the closing bias the last two days... I noticed that there were dragging in the opposite direction than the last two days and that they removed at least three inches of cushion as the bike tire's barely permeate the track surface with most of the rubber showing above the track material. SPEED WILL RULE TODAY. Wonder if Cassie Coleman will be the happiest person leaving the track today when McWicked wins on the front end?

If Dave Miller drove this first race yesterday with the same style and fractions, he would have been done by the three quarter pole. He took all the heat from the start to the end and tired late in the lane to finish third in a race that he would have been last if raced yesterday. These drivers should now that early speed will be tough to beat and the first over move early is a suicidal move.

I'm going to go with He's Watching. Aside from the Rooney debacle, I believe he's undefeated on a half.

i would say they did a very poor job promoting this event. its a 1/2 mile track without a passing lane that has plenty of action unlike most of the others. they give you a great product but don't get the people there and should have a much larger handle.

Let me play devil's advocate here. Those at the fairgrounds and Mr Thompson and the Jug Committee are all very conservative in preserving the history of the sport and act more like accountants than promoters that will spend a lot of money. It is that mindset that has led to what we have today.

It is my opinion now looking back that the writing was on the wall back when Mr Thompson limited the simulcasting signal to only Tue - Wed - Thur. They no longer race on Monday or Saturdays. The actual cost of producing a simulcast signal out to the otb's and tracks amounted to about five thousand bucks as Mr Thompson wrote me to my inquiry when he started the change.

Anyone who has been there, knows that those seats cost a lot of cash, and most of the grandstand seats are sold either for the whole week or for two days (Jugette/Jug) and not individual days. It sounded weird to me that 5k would stop getting your signal out but it is the mindset there.

The last one I attended was in 2003 a year after my transplant. It seemed to have changed little since the first time I was there. I guess I am getting old and having a hard time accepting change. Everything has its day and maybe the Jug has run its course and will be in a slow decline like racing is itself going through in all its breeds.

Talk about getting old. I realized yesterday that I have attended the Jug in 5 different decades. My first was Hot Hitter and Herve in 1979.

That is an accomplishment....Augie is the Gordie Howe of the Jug!
