first step (a) It's based on graded stakes earnings for the three year old season. Highest earnings get to pick first.

It's funny that every year this race comes along and every year we are concerned about how many horses are going off. And then when a couple scratch, then we complain that we really need more horses in here.

Okay so they open 14 stalls, the main gate whatever is appropriate. Then they leave two more slots for the auxiliary gate. I dont think auxiliary gates really need to be holding 5 or 6 animals.

So (b) the last two slots go to anyone left after (a) and based on total career earnings to date. Total 16 slots, with provision for a couple of lucky horses to ship in based on highest horse eligible under (a) and another from (b)

this should satisfy any latent unfairness for horses that have been gamely trying to get back into the game after an excellent two year old season. Surely there were lots of great two year olds and plenty we wont see, and part (b) should at least take into consideration any truly outstanding horse, who is just having an off form the last couple of races. Two extra slots is plenty for any cases like this.

What point in time would be the cutoff to replace scratches?

I'm not sure what considerations go into that. Do you have to give bettor's a heads up? Like they have to replace them by Friday so bettors know what's coming on Sat.
