I'm biased, as Rachel was my favorite.

How is this not the best one ever?

I'm sure many people realize how hard it is to get "Stung" like that and hold on vs a horse with a sweeping move/momentum. That's sheer greatness, not to mention an incredible call by "the voice".

1964 Woodward Stakes, an even closer finish between two better animals. The mighty Kelso tried for his fourth straight Woodward win but his worthy rival Gun Bow (a Hall Of Famer) beat him by about a half-inch.

I might as well embed the video.

I tried before; playback restricted to YouTube only.

I think I exaggerated the winning margin when I called it a half-inch.

Kelso was one of the absolute greats of all time, Gun Bow was an excellent horse and 3YO Quadrangle had won the Wood/Belmont/Dwyer/Travers and gave it a good try but couldn't quite hang with the two greats. Given the high quality of the horses, the full-out duel between Kelso and Gun Bow throughout the final few furlongs and the tiniest of margins between them at the wire, I think 1964 was the greatest year for the Woodward.

1967 was Damascus-Buckpasser-Dr. Fager. Wow; you'll never see three like that in the same race again. But not much drama as Damascus won by 10 with Buckpasser far below his best form and Fager dueled into submission by a rabbit.

But Tom Durkin didn't yell "GUN BOW WINS". So, i'm going to have to give it to Rachel. Sorry. :)

I have been looking for the video of the 2005 Woodward for 2 years. Cant find it anywhere.... That POS Dutrow sent the rabbits after the GNYBOAT.

My first one, forego winning the woodward in 1975 at a mile and a half, try that one rach.

Notice how far out on the track Slew was. In those days we didn't have bad rails. We had 3-4 paths that were bad. lol

1994...without a doubt...but then again, I'm quite biased...

"The rhythmic beat of his long and powerful stride...."

"Winning like a champion...with DEVASTATING EASE!"

"...toyed with the best horses in training..."

And by the way, Belmont was packed that day in 1994 to see Holy Bull...the loudest and most spine-tingling non-Triple Crown stretch drive I've ever personally witnessed...

1988. Alysheba, off Lasix, in the rain, against a great field. Broke the track record, exciting stretch run. I saw it in person. Had everything.

My second choice after Gun Bow-Kelso would be Ghostzapper-St. Liam; that was a terrific duel for a long way between two excellent horses.

Rachel. But how can you not love Holy Bull beating that crowd?

Just ticking off the names that ran behind him makes me realize how bad things are now. Could "we" ever muster up a race like that again? I doubt it

Rachel because of her courage and undeniable tenacity. However, I believe it was here that she was spent. I believe it was here in Saratoga in the Woodward that she felt the toll, "I've had enough, I've given all I have." Though she came back to race, as we know.

It wasn't the field of Holy Bull's Woodward, but, to me, it was hard fought and ultimately consuming.
