At Vernon Downs tonight, in a six horse field, the winner pays 21.60 with the 2-5 shot second and the exacta returns 222.50. Incredible! This is from the us trotting website results.

That price is correct and it can happen at tracks like Vernon where there are very low pools. I can honestly say I've never seen anything like this before but anything that happens at this place doesn't surprise me one bit. I double checked this race at the CapitalOTB website and it is correct. Probably just one ticket was sold on that combo. Talk about a steal.

There was $3200 in that exacta pool. Just a case of almost everyone making tickets with the big chalk on top only.

Nice when something like that happens
The chalk-eating weasels deserve a bad result on occasion.
(That's coming from someone who bets chalk more than he should) ;)

I seem to recall mentioning something awhile back that some took issue with--that the number of chalk winners has seriously deteriorated, and continues to deteriorate. So much so that for astute exacta betters, the 2/5 odds are a solid indicator that the horse is very unlikely to win.

One of the things that makes it even more profitable is that the public (perhaps overwhelmed by the foolishness of crowds) believes that the lower the odds, the higher the probability of winning. What nonsense.

2nd at Mohawk yesterday:

3-Little Miss Artist 93.80 17.10 6.30 15842
4-Arienne 2.60 2.50 5755
1-Tailwind Hanover 3.50 2206

$2 DAILY DOUBLE (4-3) paid 150.30, pool 11590
$2 EXACTOR (3-4) paid 194.90, pool 19168

Nice to know when that heavy money favorite can be tossed for the win position. This is not new (except in frequency).

3rd at Mohawk yesterday:

2-Snapshot Springs 34.30 10.00 6.20 28736
3-Kadabrasnewrecruit 3.30 2.60 9814
7-Olympic Son 4.20 5323

$2 EXACTOR (2-3) paid 108.50, pool 33299

It has little or nothing to do with the size of the mutuel pools, except that a bit of strategic hammering at the right moment can cause a stampede to the windows to bet on the "sure thing." Which, of course, dramatically ups the odds on the other entries. Such is life in 2014.
