I'm not a speed figure maker, but all of the speed ratings from the recent Los Alamitos thoroughbred meet look too low. I know they're all done by computer though.

It's not a big deal, just something I notice.

What do you think?

When a new track opens or changes it's surface like Los Al I write own all the winning times of all races except mdn claimers or filly and mare races.

Since the meet was so short I wrote down all the times for all races.

Four races at 5f average 57.3

23 @ 5.5 average 104.0

19 @ 6f average 1:10.1

2 @6.5 average 1:09.45

2@ 7f average 1:23.1

13 @ 1 mile average 1:36.4

3 @ 1 1/16 average 1:43.2

1 @ 1 1/8 average 1:47.0---grade II race

I have a universal par chart I use to compare the speeds when I make my pace figures, so the numbers from my chart for the above sprints are 93, 93, 94, 93, 94, and routes are 90, 89, and 105 (which I bet if 10k claimers ran the 1/1/8 race would be closer to 90.)

I will do this for Keeneland's dirt track.

When I've done this in the past it closely matches the figures in Cynthia's par book when I get it.

Hope this helps.

I would go to Beyer or TFUS for a new track.
They use projection methods, not pars, which do not exist yet at a new track.
BRIS numbers, to me, jump all over the place normally.

19 @ 6f average 1:10.1

2 @6.5 average 1:09.45

Is this really correct?? 6.5f is faster than 6F?

No chance, has to be a typo.

Yes, a typo. Nice proof reading on my part.

The two 6.5 furlong races were 1:15.2 and 1:16.2, so the average is 1:15.4.5.

I'll use the 5.5 and 6f races as my main comparison to other tracks because 42 races were run at those distances.
