I am going to be in NM over Labor Day weekend, and I was thinking of checking it out. I've never been there, so I was wondering if anybody had any opinions on Downs at Albuquerque.

No way! If you have any choice in the matter stay in Santa Fe and/or Taos. Get a massage or two at Ten Thousand Waves in Santa Fe.

Enjoy

I could nt when I went to ABQ last winter but do remember that it may be hot there even in Sep. But an unseen track are always worth a visit for a fan/player.

Taos is pretty far from Albuquerque (Santa Fe only an hour). The Downs at ABQ was a pretty unremarkable dump when I lived there, but that was 20 years ago. (It was just a track at the fairgrounds.) I used to live about a mile from it, but I'd drive instead to Santa Fe Downs (long closed) cause I liked it so much better. But I think it is spruced up now with a casino, etc?

Just about ANY track is worth a visit if you have not yet been there.

My visit about 8 years ago (with casino section up and running) found it to be quite ordinary and plain. Nothing special at that time to make it stand out.

I could have done a better job of writing my initial post. I am going to be staying about 30 minutes away from Albuquerque, so I'm almost certainly going to check it out, but wondered if there were any strong positive or negative feelings about the place. I appreciate everybody's input.

Nothing special about it.You might want to go down to the paddock and ask Robby the vet who looks good in races with the veteran runners. They run the quarter horses as well which is cool.

Friday night Santa Fe celebrates Zozobra which is interesting. If you like spicy vegetables try the world famous green chile while you're there. The crop will be gone soon after your visit.

Enjoy the races and GL!

If you haven't spent any time in NM before, your time will be much better served driving up to the top of Sandia peak or something like that. There is a lot of awe-inspiring stuff in that area, but not at the ABQ track...
