Beginning with the 2014 Belmont meet which just ended, a race at a mile or over no longer carries a higher purse than a race at under a mile that has the same claiming price, allowance condition, etc.
To the best of my knowledge, NYRA was the last (major, anyway) holdout in this area - as it so often is (see also purse money to horses finishing worse than fourth, Lasix, etc.).
Just one more sign of the times in American thoroughbred racing, where speed, speed and more speed now rules - both on the track, and in the breeding shed.
