I have lived here in Baltimore- my son lives in Texas. He has three children who I miss dearly. Time to change pace. I have lived here for my entire life.
That would be 66 years/ I feel like this is a big change, but I will get to spend the last years of my life with family.
Hopefully the DFW area is like the Baltimore area in that folks are friendly !
Anyone have any any comments on living in the DFW area ??

Good idea.
It was also a good idea to wait for awhile after you retired before making that decision. Too many life changes all at once can raise stress levels.
Your posts have indicated before that Baltimore wasn't cutting it for you.
Family is extremely important.
Enjoy your retirement years.

Thinking the Labor day weekend. Give you a tour ? I'm keeping my address from you. We live 20 minutes apart and i have not seen you in a month. Video poker lives at F&M. Stop by- we can talk in person. I hate the text thing !!

Middle son lives in the DFW area. CJ spent 23 years in the USAF traveling around the world with his family. The son in DFW lived here metro Baltimore until 4 years ago and I am very close with the g-kids and miss them very much- time to rekindle. I have had it here with the punk attitude, the murders, the taxes, but most of all. not seeing the family.
I will however do my utmost to bug the s--t out of you with my PA posts from the Southwest area and now that I will be closer to the Chitown area, I may see you one day at AP !!!

Thanks Greyfox-
As you can see by the time, I am wired after making this decision. I had a long talk with my son and said why not. I later told my friends at the local tavern ( which is like a 2nd home) and many were in tears. I must owe a few $$$ to some. I will miss this place-Baltimore- like no one can imagine, but with the health issues I have had in the past 5 years (breathing-asbestos exposure-shipyards 20-years) it is time to be around those who can look out for me. Getting too damn old to do it myself. So in a few months I will be with my son, daughter-in-law and 3 grandkids-2girls-1boy who I think like me and life will be good. Do they have local taverns in the DFW area ?

You are coming to Timonium the first weekend before you move, right?
I guess your consultant job finished and went well!

I will be there the 1st Saturday- The Whizz has promised portal to portal service from Fred and Marge's in scenic downtown Curtis Bay, Md. to the lovely Northern Baltimore County area which is the home of the world renowned Timonium Race track. Hopefully. dinner, after this gala event, will be had by all at the equally well regarded Ryleighs Oyster House (owned by my friend Brian McComas- one time midfielder for the now defunct Baltimore Bays pro soccer team) where we will be charged way too much for all that we eat but not drink. Looking forward to meeting all that I have not met before.
Good for you!
Not easy picking up and changing your whole life at that age (I'm 63, so I can say that! ;))

There is such a thing as southern hospitality, and most folks down here still have manners.
I can't speak for a large metro area like Dallas - but I think you will be safer in the south.
I love my small city...when I go to the corner store I literally leave the keys in the car with the engine running, and no worries.
Come on down

Curtis:
I traveled extensively for my career in the last 30 years or so. I have spent very long stretches of time in most metropolitan areas, including Baltimore and DFW. In fact, I spent over a month straight in DFW, without going home, about five years ago. I liked it very much. On the plus side, I found the people to be friendly and courteous. I remember golfing and needing to call the hotel to get a shuttle back. One of the guys that I was paired up with in the foursome (a total stranger) absolutely insisted he give me a ride back to the hotel. When I tried to give him a few bucks for gas he was visibly insulted. My friend from Texas said you don't insult a Texan by offering money in exchange for hospitality. Lesson learned. The airport is huge but easy to get around. You can fly just about anywhere from DFW as it's an American Airlines HUB.
On the minus side there is heavy traffic over large expanses of land, the landscape is flat as a pancake for the most part. There are not a lot of beaches or bodies of water. It's not Baltimore. You are not a seaside city. You are on the Texas plains. You are going from a Northeastern climate to a Southwestern. There are ferocious Thunderstorms and some Tornadoes, but every area has their share of weather issues. You won't have to worry about Hurricanes coming up the East Coast an longer. Like any large city, you have very beautiful and very safe areas and there are marginal areas where you should not be doing something stupid to get yourself into trouble.
Any area you move to will become home with the proper attitude and outlook. I don't remember the exact Fable, but there is one about a man coming up to a new city. He asks the gatekeeper, "How are the people in this city? My old city had nothing but traitors, beggars, liars and cheats." The Gatekeeper responds, "Move on, stranger, for you you will find but the same here."
A few days later another stranger comes to the same city gate. He asks the Gatekeeper, "How are the people in this city? My old city had compassionate, helpful and friendly people." The Gatekeeper responds, "Welcome here, Stranger, you will find exactly those kind of people here as well."
Obviously the moral is you get what you are looking for and it's based on your paradigm of how you are going to perceive the new city.
I spent a week one time under the dome at a trade show across from the DFW Airport at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center. Wow. That's an experience. Basically, a small town built under an air conditioned dome. It's 74 degrees and never rains. They sure do build em "BIG" in Texas!
If I had a choice between DFW and Baltimore, I'd probably move to Texas. If I had relatives there like you do and was retired (I assume you are), it would be a "No-Brainer". No matter the age, Curtis, you are on the journey of adventure we call Life. This is just another phase. Enjoy it!

curtisonthe bay -
If you own a home in Maryland, and buy one in Texas, you might do quite well.
According to: http://www.zillow.com/md/home-values/
The median home value in Maryland is $245,200.
and the same group says
http://www.zillow.com/tx/home-values/
The median home value in Texas is $135,900.
On the Home and Garden channel I watch a show called Fixer Upper.
A married couple fix up homes in Waco, Texas.
My teeth almost drop out of my head when I see the nice homes they are able to come up with at prices well under $200,000.
All the best,

Best of luck Curtis... I know how hard it is to leave the place where you lived, loved and raised a family.
I left my beloved hood in the The Bronx about 22 years ago. I love where I currently live but there isn't a day that goes that I don't I think of The Old Neighborhood.
Moving to be near loved ones is a great idea and 'reason' to relocate. Adjusting will be tough but that's expected. Since you've been a horse player for years you could handle anything.
It will work for you Curtis, I am sure, because good things do happen to good people.

Many factors involved in the potential move. My oldest son is 2+ hours away. He has spent most of his life in the USAF since age 18. He has been all over the world serving. My middle son lived here until 4+ years ago; I grew close to the 3 grandkids. I will be within a 2+ hour drive between 2 of 3 sons and 6 grandkids.
After much thought, my plan is, to sometime after labor day, to go out there with clothes only (and a Ravens hat) for 4-6 weeks. If i like it, I come back home, tie up loose ends and adios. If I don't like the area, then I am back here to stay. I decided that I cannot simply say that this is what I am going to do and then regret that decision. Thanks all for the input; it is much appreciated.

The bad news: Can't bet over the internet from Texas.
One of my best customers toiled for years to become a winning player. He suddenly (over about a 3 month period) hit his stride. Two weeks later, all the ADWs stopped taking bets.

You can suggest to your customer that he buy Curtis' house and move to Baltimore, Dave.

You can still bet on ehorse.
You an Ralph can sit out on your back porch and bet on the illegals running across your property at night.

The ADW's stop it. There are ways around it, many of which were not a crime per se, because they are not being enforced. Recently that has changed. Enough said
